🚀✨UNOOSA was proudly represented at the International Festival of Creativity this week! UNOOSA Director Aarti Holla-Maini and United Nations Champion for Space Professor Brian Cox joined the world's leading gathering of brands, marketers, advertisers, media leaders and storytellers to engage a new audience in the conversation about space and its role in our collective future.

Alongside astronaut and geoscientist Dr. Sian Proctor — the first woman commercial spaceship pilot — and PVBLIC Foundation Chairman Sergio Fernandez de Cordova, they highlighted how space is transforming the way we connect, create and innovate.

🎬 As space technologies become embedded in everyday life, they are opening new opportunities for storytellers, marketers and decision-makers. The takeaway: space is no longer a distant concept—it is an essential part of the creative brief.

🛰️ The discussion explored how space-based data and services support everyday life: connecting remote communities, enabling disaster preparedness, and monitoring our changing climate. Yet while space technologies power many aspects of modern life, its potential remains widely overlooked outside the space sector.

By bringing space into conversations with the global creative community, the session underscored the role that communicators, brands and media can play in helping people understand why space matters, and how it contributes to sustainable development on Earth.

🤝 Beyond the seminar, the festival created avenues for dialogue with leaders across sectors on the role of space in shaping a more innovative, resilient and sustainable future.

🙏 Thank you to PVBLIC for convening these important discussions and for its partnership in advancing awareness of space as a force for sustainable development and international cooperation.

🛰️ What happens when two satellites are on a collision course and their operators can't reach each other in time?

That was the question UNOOSA put to members of the Expert Group on Space Situational Awareness during a table-top exercise in Vienna ahead of COPUOS. The answer was clear: while conjunction warnings are becoming more common, today there is still no reliable global mechanism for satellite operators to quickly identify and contact one another when urgent coordination is needed.

🌍 The exercise made the case for exactly the tool UNOOSA has developed: The UN Satellite Operator Contact Hub (UN SOCH), an online platform that allows satellite operators — public, private, academic, and others — to register and instantly find each other’s points of contact, so the right people can reach each other in minutes, not days, to coordinate operations and avoid collision.

With this tool, we are operationalising Guideline B.1 of the COPUOS Guidelines for the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities, which encourages the sharing of contact information to enhance the safety and sustainability of space operations.

Last week, we presented UN SOCH to satellite operators from around the world, the very community whose participation will make the platform effective and help keep outer space safe and sustainable for everyone.

And these past two weeks during COPUOS, the Expert Group on SSA continued work on preliminary recommendations on operationalising LTS Guidelines B.1 and B.4, helping transform voluntary principles into practical tools and procedures.

🚀 UN SOCH launches in July 2026. Stay tuned!

🚀UNOOSA just launched two new initiatives that put space directly to work for people on the ground: and .

🤝 UNOOSA and UNIDO - United Nations Industrial Development Organization signed a Joint Declaration launching Space4Industry, a new platform that helps countries use space technologies to strengthen industries, build resilience and support sustainable development.

🤝 UNOOSA, The Commonwealth and SpaceData Inc. also launched Space4Resilience, an initiative to strengthen disaster resilience that will expand access to satellite data across all 56 Commonwealth member states, with a focus on Small Island Developing States and other countries most exposed to climate risks.

The private sector is an essential partner in both efforts. SpaceData's AI-powered digital twin technology can simulate floods, sea-level rise and other hazards, helping governments prepare before disasters happen.

🇧🇷 This cooperation is already delivering results. UNOOSA, UNIDO and SpaceData are working together on solutions in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, to develop flood simulations and strengthen industrial resilience.

🌍 Both initiatives share a simple principle: countries should be partners and co-creators, not just beneficiaries. Capacity-building remains central, including through UNOOSA's UN-SPIDER programme, helping turn data into action.

These partnerships also show what is possible when the UN system, governments and industry work together to deliver solutions where they are needed most.

🔗 To help shape the priorities of Space4Resilience, Member States are invited to share their disaster resilience needs and priorities through a survey: https://un-survey.web.app/

🚀✈️ What happens when a rocket launch and a commercial flight need the same sky?

As space launches and re-entries become more frequent, this is no longer a rare question. Every launch or re-entry can require airspace to close, affecting flight routes, airline operations, passengers and space missions alike.

📖That is why UNOOSA just published a new issues brief to inform the space community of this issue: “Challenges and Opportunities of Airspace Integration for Space Transportation Operations.”

It outlines why the current reliance on ad hoc airspace closures is becoming harder to sustain, and why stronger international cooperation, greater transparency, harmonized practices and practical coordination between aviation and space authorities are increasingly needed.

🚧 With over 315 successful launches in 2025 alone, what was once exceptional is becoming routine. The stakes are high: delays and rerouting for aviation, increased fuel burn and network disruption, missed orbital windows for space operators, and growing questions of fairness, efficiency and safety for all users of airspace.

🤝This week in Vienna, on the margins of , the ICAO - International Civil Aviation Organization Space Operations Task Force was launched to advance this work, bringing together aviation and space communities to discuss how launch and re-entry operations can be safely and efficiently integrated into airspace systems.

Because the future is not about choosing between rockets and planes. It is about making sure both can operate safely, efficiently and fairly in the same shared sky.

📚🚀 Today we launched the United Nations version of "Tala and Her Journey through Space", a children's book that brings the wonders and rules of outer space to young minds around the world!

Tala, which means 'star' in Filippino, was originally created by the Philippine Space Agency🇵🇭 as “Si Tala at ang Kanyang Lakbay Kalawakan”. This remarkable book has been internationalised and brought to an international audience by UNOOSA and United Nations Vienna, and is now available in all 6 official languages of the UN: English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and Russian.

Through Tala's eyes, children will discover:
🌍 The role of the UN and COPUOS in ensuring the peaceful uses of outer space
🛰️ How satellite technologies drive sustainable development on Earth
📜 The importance of international space law and satellite registration
🌕 The importance of international cooperation as humanity looks towards the Moon

As UNOOSA Director Aarti Holla-Maini said today: "Inspiring the youth is not just about teaching science; it is also about teaching the rules, cooperation, and diplomacy that keep space peaceful and sustainable for everyone."

Tala's journey does not stop there. UNOOSA is actively working with Member States to translate the book into additional national languages. Liechtenstein🇱🇮 has already stepped up with a contribution to support a German translation, reaching six German-speaking countries, while Malta🇲🇹 and Slovenia🇸🇮 have signalled their intent to translate Tala into Maltese and Slovenian.
