September is one of the best times of year for whale watching on Grand Manan — and lately, our guests haven’t even had to leave their cottage to catch the show.

We’ve had lots of whale sightings right from the hot tubs, with guests soaking under the open sky while watching whales pass through the bay. It doesn’t get much more magical than that.

In Our Element — A Weekly Element Four Series #11

Some island traditions are deliciously simple.

In the summer, one of ours is a weekly stop at North Head Bakery to pick up our bread for the week. Our favourite is the Saint John River Valley loaf — a grainy French-style bread that rarely makes it home without someone sneaking a piece first.

The bakery itself is one of those cozy, unassuming Grand Manan spots that just feels like part of island life. Settle in for lunch with a fresh sandwich, a warm bowl of soup or a slice of their spice pizza, or pop in while exploring North Head for a coffee and something sweet from the pastry case.

There’s something extra good about bread baked locally, a little bakery filled with character, and having a favourite order you come back for week after week.

Definitely one to add to your Grand Manan stops.

In Our Element — A Weekly Element Four Series #10

For week ten, we’re exploring a place woven right into the landscape around Element Four — Castalia Marsh.

At first glance, it’s quiet. But spend a little time here and you realize just how much is happening.

Flocks of geese gather across the marsh, shorebirds move with the tide, wild roses grow along the edges, and the shoreline is scattered with all the little things that make a toddler stop every few feet to investigate.

There are picnic shelters for lingering over lunch, places to wander, and plenty of room to simply stand still and watch island life happening around you.

No big hike. No destination to conquer. Just salt air, big skies, curious little hands and a beautiful corner of Grand Manan worth slowing down for.

There’s still a little summer left… and Grand Manan is calling.

Slow mornings with the windows open to the salty air. Days spent exploring beaches, trails and hidden corners of the island. Evenings soaking under the sky, warming up in the sauna and settling into that peaceful kind of tired that only comes after a day by the sea.

And with August & September being some of the best months for whale watching in the Bay of Fundy, there’s still so much island magic ahead.

Old Thom, Grand Manan’s legendary orca, has been spotted back in the bay!

August and September are some of the very best months for whale watching on Grand Manan. As the waters fill with life, your chances of seeing whales—including humpbacks, minkes, fin whales, and, if you’re lucky, the magnificent orca Old Thom and his pod of white sided dolphins—are at their highest.

Whether you head out on a whale watching tour or simply keep your eyes on the water from one of the island’s many scenic lookouts, you never know what incredible encounter awaits.

In Our Element – A Weekly Element Four Series #9

Some places change completely depending on when you visit them, and Whistle Beach is one of those places.

We started our afternoon at the lookout, watching shafts of sunlight break through the clouds and dance across the Bay of Fundy. From above, it’s easy to lose track of time just watching the coastline stretch into the distance.

Later, we wandered down to the beach, where the tide had left behind a maze of driftwood and smooth stones. It’s the kind of shoreline that kids instantly turn into an adventure—every stick becomes a sword, every rock is worth inspecting, and every few steps there’s another question about what washed ashore.

As the evening settled in, we watched the sun sink below the horizon. The cliffs glowed, the water turned to gold, and for a few quiet minutes it felt like the whole island had paused.

Whistle Beach has a way of giving you three completely different experiences in one day—dramatic coastal views, a shoreline made for exploring, and sunsets that are worth staying out for.

This week’s reminder: sometimes the best itinerary is simply to pick a place and let the day unfold.

In Our Element – A Weekly Element Four Series #8
Long Eddy Point Lighthouse • Easy Walk • North Head

This week we found ourselves at one of Grand Manan’s most iconic viewpoints—Long Eddy Point Lighthouse.

Perched high above the Bay of Fundy, this is one of those places where it’s impossible not to stop, breathe, and take it all in. The viewing deck offers sweeping views across the water and is one of the island’s best spots for watching the ocean come alive.

Bring a pair of binoculars (or borrow the ones available on-site) and keep your eyes on the water—you never know what might appear. Long Eddy Point is a favourite place to spot whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, basking sharks, and countless seabirds, especially during the summer months. The interpretive signs on the viewing platform make it even more fun, helping you identify the incredible marine wildlife that calls these waters home.

For our little family, it was one of those adventures that reminded us how special Grand Manan really is. Watching boats pass by, searching the waves for wildlife, and sharing quiet moments overlooking the Bay of Fundy are memories we’ll always treasure.

Sometimes the best adventures aren’t about the distance you travel—they’re about slowing down long enough to see what the ocean has waiting for you.
