At Caracolí Bird House in Colombia’s Meta region, this Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo) — a female or juvenile — paused on a lichen-covered branch while holding a small piece of fruit in its bill.

The warm chestnut-brown plumage and darker head create a quiet, understated appearance that stands in sharp contrast to the brilliant crimson of adult males. Soft green background light and the textured branch frame the bird in a calm, natural setting.

This strong difference between the sexes is one of the defining features of the species. Photographing both forms helps present a fuller picture of the birds that inhabit the eastern Andean foothills and supports a more complete understanding of the biodiversity found at community conservation sites like Caracolí.

At Caracolí Bird House in Colombia’s Meta region, this Blue-gray Tanager (Thraupis episcopus) of the white-edged variant paused among the green stems, its soft blue-gray body set against bright turquoise wings marked with clean white edges.

The refined contrast between the muted gray tones and the vivid blue of the wings creates a quiet elegance that distinguishes this form from the more commonly seen birds of the same species. Working from a respectful distance with the Canon R5 and RF800mm plus 1.4x extender, I was able to hold fine feather detail even at a slow shutter speed in the soft light.

These subtle variations within familiar species continue to reward careful observation in the eastern Andean foothills and remind us of the rich diversity still present in well-protected habitats.

At Caracolí Bird House in the Meta region of Colombia, this Saffron Finch (Sicalis flaveola) perched on a slender green stalk and turned into the soft morning light.

His brilliant golden-yellow plumage glowed with warmth, highlighted by a deeper orange crown and subtle brown markings along the wings. The soft gray bill and alert dark eye gave the bird a bright, cheerful presence against the lush green background.

These small finches are a familiar yet striking part of the avian life found in open landscapes and gardens across the eastern Andean foothills. Their vibrant color and lively nature serve as a reminder of the rich biodiversity supported by community conservation efforts in the region.

In the soft early morning light at Caracolí Bird House in Villavicencio, Meta, Colombia, this Chestnut-eared Aracari (Pteroglossus castanotis) paused on a weathered branch, caught in the quiet transition between night and day.

The bird’s dark head is beautifully accented by a rich chestnut ear patch, while deep green plumage flows across its back and wings. A vibrant yellow belly and bold red accents on the lower back and tail create striking contrast with its large, multicolored serrated bill — a specialized tool for its life as a fruit specialist and seed disperser.

These charismatic toucans are vital links in the forest ecosystem of the eastern Andean foothills, helping regenerate the canopy one fruit at a time. A moment of stillness that speaks volumes about the delicate balance of life in the Meta region.
