A common yet impressive sighting: a ribbon snake working on its prey, a whiptail lizard, right at the edge of the trail. Nobody set this up and nobody stepped in. Our threatened yet very productive ecosystem countlessly affords us spectacles as such, every single day.

Trails, natural corridors, and affluents. There are now about 40km of these, within the Rio Perdido Reserve. They cross volcanic plateaus, tropical dry forest, and the canyons below. Most of these trails are ideal for hiking, some are considered the best mountain biking single track in the region… and some take you to and through RP’s mystical rivers.. Then there’s the Canyon Adventure, which is basically an aerial trail. The cables and bridges move you through the empty spaces, carved by time and the elements. These paths generally follow the topography instead of cutting through it. This makes them slower to build. Some sections change quite a bit as the year progresses and the climate varies. So, here you can move around by foot, on a bike, in the water, or through the air. It all feels natural… it stimulates our innate sense of adventure and thus, it is part of that beautiful wellness energy, that must be shared with our setting for it to be optimal.

Gisella has been on the team for six years. Ask her about Rio Perdido and she will tell you that her interaction with her mates here has been therapeutic. It is not the kind of thing you typically hear about a job. Most of the people here… who welcome you, cook for you, and guide you through the canyon are from the surrounding communities. That is intentional. It would be simpler to bring in trained staff from Liberia or San José, already used to hotel work. We prefer that the jobs stay close to the land, and we train people here. Actually, we train EACH OTHER. Our team knows the trails, the seasons, and the river better than any manual could teach. Like Gisella’s, there are so many beautiful Rio Perdido stories.

On June 5, our team found a severely injured juvenile howler monkey, not far from our reception.

He could not jump or climb… and he could barely walk. His chances of survival were zero. So— as we have done before with so much of the native fauna in the area, we took him in and we gave him a name: *Orion*.

Following the proper protocol, our technical team transferred him to , where he received the treatment and care he needed.

Less than a month later, Orion was back in the trees.

Protecting this place means caring for everything that calls it home.

Every hotel publishes a list of things responsible travelers should do. Ours exists too.

Research where you are going. Keep your distance from wild animals and never feed them. Buy from local artisans and pay a fair price. Do not buy anything made from endangered species or unsustainably sourced materials. Be mindful of the water and electricity you use.

None of it is original, and that is fine. What matters is whether the place that is making these requests also does its part.

The Rio Perdido Project began with a group of explorers who came upon a rare ecosystem with a very unique thermal river in eastern Guanacaste and decided to protect it. After 16 years of land acquisition and successful reforestation efforts, the thriving reserve now covers 1,500 acres.

The hotel is certified carbon neutral under Costa Rica's INTE B5:2016 regulation. It holds the highest, Elite Level with its certificate of Sustainable Tourism. All wastewater is treated and reused for irrigation and reforestation. The list is much, much longer.

Asking people to travel responsibly is easy. Making a near perfect example in your development processes and operation is a more complex, yet essential first step.

Around the world, people know Costa Rica produces great coffee.

Also, Rio Perdido is among the few hospitality projects in the world that source organic coffee. It is worrisome that only 1-2% of the world’s coffee is actually organic, as Arabica plants are much more susceptible to pests and fungus than they were even a couple of decades ago, so generally, they are constantly and profusely “sprayed”with chemicals.

Stargazing may be one of the oldest outdoor activities in the world.

Long before maps, compasses, or GPS, people looked to the night sky for guidance. The Maya tracked the stars to understand time and the seasons, while sailors crossed oceans by following familiar constellations.

Today, we rarely have the chance to see a truly dark sky.
At Rio Perdido, far from cities and surrounded by protected forest, the stars become part of the experience once again.

Most guests tell Kevin that he has the best job in the world. After spending an afternoon with him, it is easy to understand why. His story at Rio Perdido began with a passion for mountain biking. Today, that same passion for the outdoors takes him through many different experiences across the reserve, from biking and tubing to hiking and bird watching. What stands out is how much he genuinely enjoys sharing this place with others. Ask him if he feels like he is working, and he will probably tell you no. For Kevin, every day means being outside, exploring the canyon, spending time on the trails, and introducing people to a landscape he never seems to get tired of. Maybe the guests are right after all.
