150 Years Hamburg Süd (interlude)
Our special exhibition Hamburg Süd - 150 Years on the World’s Oceans“ was supposed to end this Sunday. Nevertheless, given the extraordinary interest shown by our visitors and the many message that have reached us by people wishing they would have had the chance to see it, we have decided to change our plans. The special exhibition will stay on display on deck 1 of the museum until March the 4th 2023!
This means that is you are coming to attend the International Shipmodelling Days at the museum between September the 16th and 18th, you can ad the exhibition to the highlights you can experience at the museum. Our team is specially proud about how the exhibition came out, so this is good news to us as we hope it is to those who will visit us in the coming months.
This also give us a moment to look back to what we have done online with this series that we started with the opening of the exhibition on November the 4th 2021. That day also marked the 150 anniversary of the founding of the company. Last week we published the 41st chapter of this story, in which we reached the 1980s. As we will soon see, that was a decade that the Hamburg Süd company used to stabilize the markets they ad iron into, while keeping a steady course of modernization. At that point, the company had already become a global player. That status is quite amazing if one considers that, in 1871, the company was founded with a rather small capital just to try and profit from the existing mercantile contracts that the city of Hamburg had with Brazil.
When we started telling this story, we promised that it would draw a portrait of the evolution of modern merchant shipping, and of how it was influenced by geopolitical tensions and conflicts, and by social and technological changes. We hope that you think that we have kept our promise so far. But this story is not over! We still have 40 years of recent history to tell. We are just making a short pause due to the preparations for the International Shipmodelling Days (that are going to be amazing) and we will soon be back with our weekly chapters on the history of 150 Years Hamburg Süd.
In the meantime, Here are some impressions of the exhibition, that will hopefully encourage you to come see it in person.
