We explored Cala d’Hort so you don’t have to — and yes, it’s definitely worth the detour.

First of all, you’ll be captivated by the magnificent islets of Es Vedra, which are believed to be the third most magnetic place on Earth, along with its smaller counterpart, Es Vedranell.

There are three restaurants overlooking the beach: Es Boldado, Restaurant Cala d’Hort, and Restaurant El Carmen. This time, we will focus on Es Boldado.

To get there from Sant Josep to Cala d’Hort, take the last right turn toward Cala Truja. After about 3 kilometres, you’ll see the sign for Es Boldado on the left. Turn onto this road and drive down the dusty Camino (dirt track) for approximately 1.5 kilometres. You will be treated to the best view of Ibiza. If you’re looking for a restaurant with a stunning view, this is the place for you.

To start, we had the usual pan con alioli y aceitunas, followed by,

One of the most famous dishes at Es Boldado is caldereta de langosta (lobster stew).

The caldereta de langosta (unforgettable lobster stew) is quite expensive at €145 per kg; you will likely need 2 kilograms for four people!

Lubina donostiarra (seabass San Sebastián style).

Fideuà del senyoret (a pasta noodle (not the usual rice) seafood paella, where all the seafood is peeled and de-shelled to avoid sticky fingers). Also known as paella senyoret or blind fideuà.

Flaó is a light dessert featuring creamy cheese, lemon zest, mint, and aniseed liqueur. Traditionally, flaós were part of Easter family celebrations, but they are now available year-round.

Graixonera is a dish made with day-old ensaimadas, eggs, cinnamon, orange peel, lemon peel, and lard.

To drink, we had two bottles of wine that were paired excellently with the food.

To accompany our desserts, we enjoyed the famous Café Caleta, made using a classic recipe. First, ground coffee is added to a saucepan with one litre of boiling water and left to infuse for about eight minutes. Meanwhile, in another saucepan, we combine brandy, rum, and sugar, along with orange and lemon peels, a stick of cinnamon, and a few coffee beans.

Aim for weekday evenings to avoid crowds and snag a table facing the islet.

Eat Local......

STOP EATING AT MCDONALD’S IN VALENCIA

You have flown hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres to visit one of Europe’s great food cities. So why are you having coffee in Starbucks?

It might sound harsh, but if there is one piece of advice I could give every visitor to Valencia, it would be this: eat and drink local.

Valencia is blessed with incredible produce. The vegetables from the huerta, seafood from the Mediterranean, rice from the Albufera, local wines from Utiel-Requena, clóchinas in spring, oranges in winter and olive oil from across the Valencian Community.

You are surrounded by ingredients that people around the world would love to have on their doorstep. Yet every year, more international chains appear across the city centre. McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Starbucks and countless global brands continue to expand while many independent bars and restaurants struggle with rising rents, higher energy costs and increasing competition.

Local business owners are worried. Commercial rents in popular areas such as Ciutat Vella, Ruzafa and El Cabanyal have risen sharply in recent years, making it increasingly difficult for family-run cafés, bakeries and bars to survive. Many of these businesses have served their neighbourhoods for decades.

When you spend €20 in a local bar on a menú del día, more of that money stays in Valencia. It pays local staff, local suppliers, local landlords and local taxes. The same goes for your morning coffee. Why spend €5 on a chain coffee when you can enjoy a café con leche and a fresh pastry in a neighbourhood café for less?

A traditional menú del día in Valencia still costs between €14 and €18 in many local restaurants and often includes three courses, bread, a drink and coffee. In some neighbourhoods, you can still find excellent options for under €15. Try getting that value from a global fast-food chain.

The best places are rarely found on the main tourist streets. Wander one street back. Look for handwritten chalk menus. Listen for Spanish being spoken around you. Ask your accommodation host, your taxi driver or local Facebook groups for recommendations.

Most locals are proud of their city and happy to help. Tourism can either hollow out a place or help preserve what makes it special. Every coffee, every lunch and every tapa is a small decision. Choose wisely.

Support the people who make Valencia, Valencia.

Ibiza’s Stonehenge

Sometimes referred to as the Ibizan Stonehenge, “Time and Space” is a thought-provoking art installation created by renowned sculptor Andrew Rogers in 2014.

Located on the cliff edge in the secluded bay of Callallentia, the sculpture stands proudly against the rocky outcrops and the dazzling Balearic Sea, blending beautifully with the stunning coastline near the famous Doors of Es Vedra artwork.

Made from imported basalt stone from Turkey, the arrangement of the stones represents the solar system, with the central and largest stone capped in gold to symbolise the sun. The surrounding stones depict the planets orbiting around the central stone, meticulously placed according to the Fibonacci sequence.

The sculpture takes on additional significance during the dramatic sunsets the island is famous for, enhancing visitors’ experience.

Time and Space is located off the beaten path and can be challenging to find, making a visit to this impressive sculpture a memorable and worthwhile experience.
