What a fantastic Black History Month event at Elphinstone Hall yesterday!

Brought together by a small team from UNISON Aberdeen City and the Aberdeen Universities branches, the event showcased the power of partnership and community.

Attendees enjoyed thought-provoking speakers, fashion, vibrant dance performances and stalls from a range of organisations sharing information, experiences and opportunities for involvement.

The food was a real highlight, with the university catering team providing an excellent tasting menu and refreshments that celebrated a rich variety of flavours and cultures.

A big thank you to everyone who helped organise, participate in and support the event. Together, we created a welcoming space to celebrate Black history, culture and contributions while fostering meaningful conversations, learning and solidarity.

What a great afternoon at the ACHSCP Conference yesterday!

UNISON Aberdeen City was proud to attend alongside colleagues and organisations from across health and social care.

It was fantastic to meet so many people, share information about the work of our union, and have positive conversations about the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

We were delighted to engage with delegates throughout the afternoon and highlight how UNISON continues to support members working across health and social care services.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand for a chat. We look forward to building on the connections made and continuing to work in partnership to support staff and improve services across Aberdeen.

Thank you, too, to all the speakers (Stand up to Falls got us all moving with the Super Six) and the Beach Ballroom for the venue and catering.

🟣 Reform cannot mean doing more with less.

Public services need investment, not cuts. Any proposals for reform must protect jobs, value frontline staff and ensure communities continue to receive the services they rely on.

As highlighted during the BBC Debate Night discussion, workers deserve a real voice in decisions about the future of public services. Frontline staff understand the challenges facing our services and should be at the heart of shaping solutions.
UNISON Aberdeen City stands alongside members across Scotland in calling for:
✅ Investment in public services
✅ No compulsory redundancies
✅ Meaningful engagement with workers and trade unions
Public sector reform must work for workers, services and communities.

💚 October is Health Literacy Month 💚

Health information can sometimes feel complicated, especially when you're unwell, worried or supporting someone else.

Health literacy is about being able to find, understand and use health information to make informed decisions about your health and wellbeing. The Knowledge Network Scotland also highlights the importance of trusted information and helping people use it with confidence.

A few simple reminders:

🔹 Ask questions if something isn't clear
🔹 Ask for information to be explained in plain language
🔹 Check that information comes from a trusted source
🔹 Take someone with you to an appointment if it would help
🔹 Remember, there's no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your health

Good communication isn't just about giving people information. It's about making sure they can understand and use it.

This , let's encourage each other to ask questions and feel confident making decisions about our health.

🚨 Better Funding for Our Councils 🚨

Local councils are facing a deepening funding crisis, putting essential services and the workers who provide them under increasing pressure.

From social care and education to roads, housing and community services, councils are expected to do more with less year after year.

The result? Cuts to services, growing workloads for staff, and communities paying the price.

While local government funding in Scotland is primarily determined by the Scottish Government, the overall funding available is also affected by decisions made at Westminster.

That's why we need action at every level of government to ensure councils receive the resources they need.
