It's been joyful to have so many people come and stay at Shining Cliff hostel, or hire the hostel or the Beech Hut for the day, and despite cancellations due to the crazy winds, we've had some fabulous woodland sessions with Woodland Connections

We ask guests for photos that we can share, and for reviews and are so grateful for messages sent after a stay or visit, sharing memories with us of their time in the woods.

Thanks so much for photos shared from this week, I love that Pooh Bear has been to the woods!

Thanks to everyone who has supported us this month, we've had 281 people use the hostel/beech hut/attend sessions and the hostel has been in use 75% of the month, and the Beech Hut has been booked 16 times this month, both of which are cause for a happy dance!

Update: Cookie has been found (got all the way to Alpert Heights!) and reunited with owner 🧡
If you’re in Shining Cliff woods today please look out for a lost puppy called Cookie. It’s a brown and cream cocker spaniel and should come to you if call ‘Cookie, Cookie come’

🤦‍♀️so I’d say a ‘normal’ response to this view would be awe at the beauty of Autumn and how lucky to live where you see this every day….however my thoughts ran along the following lines:
🍁look at all these blooming’ leaves on the path
🍂 it’s going to make the hostel path really muddy
🍁 I’ll get a leaf blower and clear the entire path when the fun of crunchy autumn leaves is over
🍂and why are there so many chestnut cases on the path, couldn’t they fall somewhere else?!
😂 think I may be missing the entire point of a hostel in the middle of a beautiful woodland (but I’m serious about that leaf blower)!

♻️ Even a woodland hostel produces rubbish.
It's something you probably don't think about when you book a stay.
But 20 people staying at the hostel can produce a surprising amount of waste — and we need to make sure it's collected and dealt with properly.
We've therefore introduced a waste collection service, which adds another ongoing cost to running the hostel.
It's not particularly glamorous, but it's important.
We want to look after the woods around us as carefully as we can, and that means taking responsibility for what happens to the waste our guests produce.
So when you're staying at Shining Cliff, please keep doing your bit too:
🌿 Reduce what you bring
♻️ Reuse where you can
🚮 Sort your waste carefully
🌳 And leave the woodland as you found it

💚 Thinking about volunteering but not sure if it's for you?
Come and try Fettle, Kettle & Cake.
We're deliberately a small, informal volunteer group – usually around 6–8 people – and there's no expectation that you'll know anyone or know what you're doing.
Some people have been coming for several years.
Some come every now and again when life allows.
Some came once just to see what it was like.
And some are brand new.
They're all welcome.
Our sessions are practical and varied, and no previous experience is needed. All tools and equipment are provided and we'll explain what we're doing.
The only thing we ask is that you're able to manage the uneven terrain of the woodland.
We work from 12.30–3pm every other Tuesday, and there's no need to sign your life away to a regular volunteering commitment.
Come when you can.
Do a bit of fettling.
Meet some friendly people.
Put the campfire kettle on.
Have a cuppa and a slice of cake.
Then head home feeling like you've spent an afternoon doing something worthwhile. 🌳🫖🍰

The world will still be there when you get back.
Come and enjoy four hours of peace, nature, good food and connection at Women Gathering.
You don't have to be productive all the time.
You don't have to achieve anything.
You can simply come, relax, enjoy nature and spend time with other women.
That's what Women Gathering is all about. 💚

Turns out the clocks falling back means the hostel dog walk takes place at sunset, what an absolute joy this was last night!
The Derwent Valley is hilly, there’s not many walks you can do without a hill to encounter, but oh my, the views are just awesome and food for my soul!

A question….the hostel was rebuilt in the 1970’s, the insulation is not great, the bunk beds are my nemesis because they were designed for the bottom bunk to be very low to the ground, trapping condensation, and they are so heavy to move which has to be done after each booking to remove the condensation on the floor.
The bunks next to outer walls also get condensation building up on the wall and pooling on the floor- so in winter bookings we can come in each day to keep it nice.
Replacing the bunks is next on the list after the car park track is resurfaced. But would wooden panelling on these outer bedroom walls also help reduce the condensation?
Any suggestions would be great!
