Featherstone Castle - one of those places where Northumberland absolutely refuses to be subtle.

The core of the building goes back to the medieval period, with a hall-house that may date from the 13th century and an early 14th-century tower still incorporated into what you see today. Much of the rest was rebuilt and expanded in the early 19th century, giving it that wonderfully over-the-top castellated appearance. It’s now Grade I listed.

The setting helps too - tucked beside the South Tyne with woodland all around and the open Northumberland landscape stretching away behind. And just beyond the castle are the remains of Featherstone Park, the huge prisoner-of-war camp that held thousands of German officers after the Second World War.
