The UK Government has announced plans to ban social media access for under-16s, citing concerns around children’s safety, wellbeing and mental health.

At WHYSUP, we work with young people every day and see first-hand the challenges that excessive or unhealthy social media use can create. We also see how what begins as a habit can quickly develop into something more problematic.

Young people today are exposed to a constant stream of content, comparison, unrealistic expectations, cyberbullying, harmful challenges and, in some cases, material relating to self-harm, su***de and eating disorders.

Social media is not all bad. It can help young people stay connected, access support and build communities. But the evidence increasingly suggests that unrestricted access at a young age can have serious consequences for mental health, wellbeing, sleep, confidence and self-esteem.

We support measures that prioritise the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. Reducing exposure to potentially harmful online environments is a positive step towards protecting the next generation.

Education still has a huge role to play.

WHYSUP will continue to deliver prevention and education workshops on habits, social media, mental health, wellbeing and addiction, helping young people understand the risks, recognise warning signs and make healthier choices online and offline.

A habit you control, an addiction controls you.

What you are in control of is doing something about it.

You don’t have to wait until you’re at crisis point.

For the last two days, Whysup has been at alongside a range of local organisations.

It was a great opportunity for students to learn more about what we do, while also giving us valuable insight into the topics they feel are most important to young people today.

The results have been really interesting and will help shape some of our curriculum and content for the year ahead.

A huge thank you to Rebecca and Stef for all their hard work, and to the students for their enthusiasm, engagement and honest feedback.

This afternoon, Whysup In The Community were at Asda Astley Bridge with students from Little Lever School. 💙

As part of our 6-week programme, students are raising money for local charities. This term, we’re proud to be supporting .

Today, students spent time singing, packing bags and selling products to the local community. It’s great to see them building confidence, developing new skills and giving back to others.

A huge well done to all involved, and a special thank you to Christine Baldwin from Asda, who continues to go above and beyond in supporting this programme year after year.

A true community champion. 👏💙

Thanks for having us, .

Today, Mark delivered six sessions to more than 1,000 students on the topic of addiction.

Drawing on his lived experience, Mark shared his personal story of addiction and recovery, alongside educational content exploring some of the fastest-growing addictions affecting young people today.

The engagement throughout the day was fantastic, with students asking thoughtful questions and contributing to some really important conversations.

Thank you to all the staff and students for making us feel so welcome and for looking after us throughout the day.

CALLING ALL THE BOLTON RECOVERY COMMUNITY 🚨🚨🚨🚨

Next Friday I’ll be meeting up with Gab Stone when he runs through Bolton.

Gab is 11 years into his recovery from a gambling addiction. An addiction that resulted in Gab going to jail.

He’s running 30 marathons in 30 days and said he will run through Bolton so we can meet up and join him for a small part of his journey (still come if you just want to pat him on the back).

I wanted to invite anyone who is in recovery or an affected other to show their support. Or even anyone who wants just say well done! Let’s give Gab a good bolton welcome.

* it’s likely to be in the day of the 12th and appreciate people work. I’ll shortly come back with times 💙
