If only these walls could talk…
I’ve been digging into the history of our beautiful old pub, The Six Bells in Chislet, Kent, and uncovered some fascinating stories!
Here are a few of my favourite discoveries…
🔔 The story behind its name: In 1729, the four bells of nearby St Mary’s Church were recast into six, inspiring the pub’s name. Almost 300 years later, they’re still ringing!
🍺 A Victorian watering hole: In 1881, the landlord was William Port, aged 51, who lived at the pub with his wife Mary.
🐴 Horse drawn b**r deliveries: Old photographs show Rigden’s Fine Ales advertised outside, with a horse-drawn cart and villagers gathered at the entrance.
🎻 Dancing in the streets: An old newspaper reports that traditional folk dancers once performed outside the pub, accompanied by violins and accordions, entertaining locals and passing motorists!
🎶 Live music: I’ve even found entertainment listings from 1990 and 1992. Clearly, the Six Bells knew how to throw a good night!
☎️ My favourite little detail? Its old telephone number was simply Chislet 373!
Today, the pub has become our countryside retreat, but the original b**r cellars remain, along with a bar, jukebox and pool table to keep its spirit alive.
I love thinking about all the people who’ve walked through these doors, the conversations, celebrations and memories made here over the generations.
Does anyone remember The Six Bells when it was still a working pub? I’d absolutely LOVE to hear your memories or see your old photographs! ✨
