Recently I attended several talks about water at Medicine Festival and I learned that in March 2017, New Zealand’s Mairi won Personhood for the Whanganui River.

WHANGANUI RIVER, AOTEAROA

“The river flows from the mountain to the sea, I am the river and the river is me.”

Section 12 - The river is an indivisible and living whole incorporating all its physical and metaphysical elements.

NZ passed this bill and now the river has its own legal identity as an individual.

Its rights MATTER

They have to be considered (ie sewage disposal or factory discharge is not welcome).

The Mairi people looked for modern day solutions and focused on what they could do going forward.

How we care for our natural world, of which we are all a part, is paramount.

Our interactions demonstrate who we are, and all actions come back to us.

Being around the many indigenous at Medicine Festival was a great reminder.

Caring for our waters is a great way to look after our planet.
