Edinburgh’s Christmas returns from 14 November to 3 January and the city is getting ready. Mulled w**e in hand and the Big Wheel turning over Princes Street Gardens. ❄️🎄

The markets are free to wander around, with around 70 stalls of local food, drink and gifts. If you fancy more, there’s the ice rink on George Street and the Big Wheel for the best view of the lights. 🎡

Planning a family city break? Here are some Calton Living favourites to add to your Edinburgh itinerary:

Stay: Haymarket Apartments by Calton
Make yourself at home in a Georgian townhouse in the West End, with a kitchen for easy breakfasts and snack breaks. The tram and train are close by for getting around. 🏠

Coffee: Meh meh.
Ease into the day with a coffee at this relaxed West End spot ☕

Bakery: The Palmerston The Palmerston 🥐
Pick up something freshly baked from the in-house bakery. Head there before 11am if you’d like to sit in; after that, coffee and pastries are takeaway only.

Brunch: Two Children
Make time for a proper brunch stop in Stockbridge, a good chance for everyone to refuel before the next outing. 🍳

Lunch: Söderberg Söderberg
Take a relaxed lunch break or some goodies to go including sourdough, open sandwiches, buns and pastries. 🥨

Dinner: Old Pal Old Pal Bar and Kitchen
Choose from small plates, sliders and pub classics to round off the day. Old Pal isn’t licensed for children under five, so this pick is best for families with older children.

A spotlight on our New Town Garden Retreat. 🌿🏙️🧘‍♀️

Nestled away on Cumberland Street, our New Town Garden retreat is the ideal location for those looking to stay close to the Stockbridge neighbourhood and the bustling atmosphere of the nearby New Town centre. This fantastic apartment hosts up to three guests and features two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a large living/dining space.

With Stockbridge just on your doorstep, you have the convenience of enjoying some of the best bistros, bakeries and coffee shops in the city. Alternatively, if you fancy exploring St James' Quarter shopping centre or any of the adjacent tourist hotspots, a short walk will take you to the top of Queen Street, where your adventure can begin.

This apartment, aptly named our garden retreat, of course, boasts a very private rear garden including a sunny patio area - the perfect spot to return to after a day of exploring. Grab yourself a local coffee from one of the nearby shops like Fortitude and enjoy the ambience of birds and the wider city.
