A rare day away from the pub today, spent getting stuck into the kitchen garden. 🌱

All the Hydroponics are up and running and ready for the seeds started late in the garage.

Tomorrow it's back to the allotment before another busy weekend at The George. There's still plenty to do, but we're pleased to say the allotment is now fully planted out. We're just waiting for the 3D printer to finish making some netting pegs before a few final jobs can be ticked off the list!

Everything we grow helps us on our sustainability journey and provides ingredients for dishes, preserves, garnishes and more throughout the year.

If you'd like to see where some of it all starts, we'll be opening our garden as part of the Castleton Secret Gardens event at the end of the month. Come along on the Sunday and have a look around.

Or, if you happen to find the back gate and we're around, feel free to say hello and have a wander through. We always enjoy showing people what we're growing! 🌿🍓🥬

The new campaign, led by Tom Kerridge and backed by hospitality organisations across the UK, is calling on the Government to reduce hospitality VAT from 20% to 10%.

This isn't about supporting one particular pub. We're certainly not claiming to be your favourite pub!

It's about protecting whichever pub, café, restaurant or hospitality venue YOU love most.

The reality is stark:
📉 366 pubs couldn’t carry on & closed permanently in 2025.😡
📉 Another 161 pubs have already closed their doors in the first three months of 2026. 🥲

Every closure means lost jobs, lost community spaces and another part of Britain's social fabric disappearing.

Hospitality is one of the UK's biggest employers and one of the most heavily taxed sectors. Yet while many European countries benefit from reduced hospitality VAT rates, UK hospitality continues to pay 20% VAT.

Whether your favourite venue is a village pub, a town-centre restaurant, a café or a local bar, rising costs are making survival harder every year.

If nothing changes, more independent hospitality businesses will disappear.

Well… that went for us, how it should in every establishment nationwide that serves food! 😏

Inspector from the Food Standards Agency (AKA - EHO) turned up today, no drama and we’ve come away with a 5⭐ Food Hygiene Rating ✅

No running round pretending, no quick fixes… just opened the doors and let them see how it is every day of the week for us!

That’s all down to the team. 👏👏The cleaning, the prep, the organisation & everything done properly even when no one’s looking 👀
No Short cuts!
Even a Fabulous Premises comment on the report. 🫶
