Halloween is approaching, here are some ghostly tales from the nearby Green Dragon at Hardraw. 👻💀🧙♀️🎃
The revenants of the Green Dragon…
They say that when a building has stood for over 700 years, not everybody who passes through its doors is quite ready to leave...
In medieval England, tales of the dead returning to walk amongst the living were enough to send a shiver down even the most chivalrous of knight's spine.
These restless spirits were known in medieval folklore as revenants, meaning 'to return'.
And here at our 13th-century inn, there are certainly a few tales of those who may never have truly departed...
The Monk in the Scullery
Deep within the oldest corners of the Green Dragon, there are tales of a monk. Seen in the former scullery, preparing mead as though the centuries have never passed. Some say the dead return to places where they have unfinished business. But what business could possibly keep a monk wandering these ancient rooms for hundreds of years?
The Gentleman by the Fire
Another tale speaks of a former owner who is said to return to his favourite creaky chair beside the fireplace. Seven centuries of history, and apparently some folk still insist upon keeping their usual seat.
The Boy Who Sings
Perhaps the most chilling tale of all is that of a young boy. There have been stories of a small ball rolling across an empty room, with nobody there to have thrown it. The faint sound of a child singing an old nursery rhyme, somewhere deep within the inn. A soft, innocent voice drifting through the corridors, growing quieter as you approach… until it’s directly behind you.
Of course, these are merely tales, whispered from one generation to the next.
But stories have a curious way of surviving.
Seven centuries is an awfully long time to keep a secret.
