Jacksons at Jedburgh
There are good farm tours, excellent farm tours, and then there’s Jackson’s at Jedburgh, which I consider among the very best in Scotland! Let me explain why. Set across 436 acres at Kershaugh Farm, this remarkable farming enterprise is run by fifth generation farmers Fenwick and Jasmine Jackson, whose passion for agriculture is infectious. With approximately 1,000 Shetland sheep, over 500 cattle, including over a 100 magnificent Highland cows, alongside pigs, goats and poultry, this is a genuine working farm experience that celebrates Scotland’s agricultural heritage. What particularly impressed me was the authenticity. Nothing feels manufactured for tourists; this is farming at its finest, delivered with genuine warmth and enthusiasm. But here's the icing on the cake! Every paid experience allows visitors to return throughout the same season without paying again. In an age when family attractions can become expensive, that represents extraordinary value. Jackson’s at Jedburgh deserves every accolade. Absolutely outstanding! Jacksons At Jedburgh

Auld Cross Keys Inn
Right in the heart of the picturesque Borders village of Denholm, the Auld Cross Keys Inn is a wonderful example of traditional Scottish hospitality. Steeped in history and bursting with character, this charming country inn offers comfortable, inviting accommodation where quality takes precedence over quantity. Having been family owned for two decades, its latest custodian, Ongdi Sherpa, brings a fascinating background as a former Nepalese mountain guide. Working here since 2017, Ongdi understands exactly what makes a memorable stay, and his genuine warmth and attention to detail shine through. The bedrooms are cosy, thoughtfully presented and provide a welcoming retreat after exploring the magnificent Scottish Borders. With its relaxed atmosphere, personal service and genuine character, this delightful inn comes highly recommended for travellers seeking something truly special. Cross Keys Denholm

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

When it comes to good, honest food, the Auld Cross Keys Inn in Denholm certainly knows how to impress. The emphasis here is firmly on traditional British favourites, carefully prepared using quality ingredients sourced from trusted local suppliers. From excellent cuts of meat supplied by nearby butchers to fresh fish delivered by reputable fishmongers, provenance clearly matters. The menu offers something for everyone, with generous portions, sensible prices and dishes that celebrate the very best of British cooking. Their carvery is particularly worthy of attention and provides another excellent reason to visit. What I particularly admire is the commitment to delivering consistently good food without unnecessary fuss. Whether stopping for lunch or enjoying a leisurely evening meal, this wonderful Borders inn certainly deserves your attention.

Black Bull Inn Moffat
There is something wonderfully romantic about spending a night in a historic Scottish inn, and Moffat’s Black Bull Inn certainly delivers. Dating back to 1568, with connections to Scotland’s celebrated poet Robert Burns, this remarkable establishment has centuries of stories hidden within its walls. Yet, for me, its greatest treasure is its latest custodian, Janie Seaton, whose passion and dedication have made this award winning inn such a special place. Having appeared on Channel 4’s Four in a Bed, Janie and her wonderful team know exactly how to make guests feel welcome. For couples seeking a romantic Scottish escape, the atmosphere, character and comfortable accommodation make this an irresistible choice. However, whether travelling with family, friends or your four legged companion, everyone receives the same genuine hospitality. Situated at the end of Moffat’s charming Main Street, this is somewhere I wholeheartedly recommend. One final tip: book directly and well in advance! The Black Bull Inn, Moffat

Annandale Arms Hotel
For couples seeking a little time together, the Annandale Arms Hotel provides a delightful excuse to escape everyday life and enjoy the beauty of southern Scotland. Moffat itself has a wonderfully romantic atmosphere, with its independent shops, inviting cafés and picturesque streets creating the perfect setting for a leisurely break. Having recently benefited from considerable investment by its enthusiastic new owners, the hotel offers stylish accommodation where comfort and attention to detail go hand in hand. Imagine spending the day exploring the surrounding countryside before returning for a lovely meal, a glass of w**e and an evening together. The hospitality is genuine, the surroundings inviting and the prices refreshingly reasonable. However, romance aside, I must emphasise that whatever brings you to this fascinating corner of Scotland, whether travelling with family, friends or on business, the Annandale Arms caters beautifully for everyone. It's certainly a hotel I would happily recommend to anyone.

Set within a beautifully preserved Victorian property, this family owned hotel has a welcoming feel from the moment you arrive. The rooms are comfortable, well presented and ideal for both short breaks and longer stays, without the inflated prices often found elsewhere. The Elphinstone Hotel
There is something wonderfully reassuring about staying at the Elphinstone Hotel in the historic Borders town of Biggar. Family owned and at the heart of the community for around 300 years, this much-loved hotel has long been a favourite with locals and visitors alike. The bedrooms have recently been refurbished to an excellent standard, with real care taken over the furnishings, finish and overall comfort. It is clear that the Allen family have invested properly, ensuring quality has never been compromised. Each room feels warm, welcoming and designed to provide a relaxing night’s stay after exploring this beautiful part of Scotland. With friendly hospitality, a central location and generations of experience behind it, the Elphinstone remains a dependable and characterful choice for anyone visiting this region.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Whatever brings you to Biggar, the food at the Elphinstone Hotel is well worth making time for. The Allen family clearly understands the importance of provenance, sourcing quality produce and allowing good ingredients to speak for themselves. I have always believed one of the best signs of a worthwhile restaurant is seeing where the locals choose to eat, and during my visit the dining room was absolutely packed. That, for me, says a great deal. Whether you are stopping for lunch, settling in for dinner or simply calling in for a drink, the Elphinstone has the dependable appeal of a true local favourite. With bedrooms and a function room also available, it is an excellent choice for family gatherings, celebrations and special occasions in Scotland.

Ridge Rock Accommodation
Ridgerock Accommodation, sitting above the popular An Poitin Still Pub in Carrick-on-Shannon, is a superb affordable option for families, small groups or friends travelling together. With three impressively spacious rooms, the accommodation here can comfortably sleep around six to eight guests, making it especially practical for a few days away. The rooms are modern, comfortable and provide everything you need for a relaxed stay in the heart of town. Carrick-on-Shannon can become wonderfully lively at weekends, so for those preferring a quieter break, I would certainly recommend visiting during the week. I have always enjoyed this town; beautifully positioned on the River Shannon, it is compact, welcoming and full of character. Better still, Ridgerock makes an excellent base for exploring Leitrim, Sligo and neighbouring Roscommon.

An Poitín Still
An Poitin Still Pub, right in the heart of Carrick-on-Shannon, is exactly the sort of place that reminds you why family-run Irish pubs remain so special. Having been in the same family for many years, there is a genuine sense of pride here, and it shows in everything they do. The staff are wonderfully attentive, always ready to go that extra mile, while the food is honest, flavoursome and served in portions that certainly won’t leave you hungry. Whether you’re calling in for breakfast, lunch or grabbing an evening bite, there is something to suit every appetite. As night falls, the atmosphere steps up a gear, particularly at weekends, with pool, darts and live sport adding to the buzz. A proper Irish pub in every sense.

Rosdarrig Bed & Breakfast
There are great Irish B&Bs, and then there are those rather special places that stay with you long after you leave. Rosdarrig Bed & Breakfast, in the popular Co. Roscommon town of Boyle, firmly belongs in the latter category. Hosts Brenda and Gerry have created, in my opinion, one of the finest B&B experiences in the region. The beautiful bedrooms are furnished to an exceptionally high standard, while breakfast is generous, delicious and certainly worthy of the phrase “fit for a king”. What really makes Rosdarrig memorable, however, is the warmth of its hosts; I could quite happily have chatted with Brenda and Gerry for hours. With Boyle Abbey, King House and Lough Key Forest Park nearby, this is a superb base for exploring Roscommon and beyond.

Lough Ree Distillery
There are some places you include in a book because they are good, and others because they have a story that simply deserves to be told. Lough Ree Distillery falls firmly into both. Set beside the River Shannon in Lanesborough, this wonderfully compact operation is, as I like to call it, the biggest small distillery I have encountered to date. Siblings Peter, Sheila and Mike Clancy have created something with genuine personality, rooted deeply in their own family history. Their parents first came to Lanesborough as teachers, met here, fell in love, and began a family story that continues through the distillery today. Each sibling brings different strengths to the business, and that sense of collaboration is evident throughout. From wh***ey tastings and distillery tours to gin and vodka experiences, there is plenty here for drinks enthusiasts. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, as this gem deserves every bit of attention it receives.
