Eating around Soho:

1. on Great Marlborough St. Traditional Italian restaurants seem to be back in a big way. And them all embracing the "bougie" style that is increasingly all the rage. Style is OTT, and while the staff are friendly they do seem a bit lost. Good for lunch and a glass of wine...

2. taking over the old Tapped & Packed site, but lacking in the style that we've expected.

3. One of the few restaurants still around since I began ( ) I popped into . Quality still just as good, prices reasonable.

4. on Golden Square serves up traditional Korean food (sorry... I'd eaten all the chicken before I took a picture) so all you get is the nice art. Typically delicious, speedy service, good prices

Eating around Soho

1. on Greek St. Sparsely (but excellently) serviced, delightful decor, this Neopolitan pizzeria (ignore the other dishes), does what it says on the box. And it's moderately priced too!

2. And on the other hand there's on Air St, a stunningly expensive shop selling nuts and chocolate. OK, so they're paying expensive rent but that's no excuse for "estimated" prices on display, before it being more expensive at the till. Few staff trained on the till, with other staff members jumping the queue to put their customer ahead of others.

3. on Kingly St and... we're back. Tiny, friendly, with great wines and bar food at high tables. As the rain fell, lunch for one felt damn right cosy... and loved.

4. on Gt Windmill St, its hard to get a picture of a chicken shawarma wrap... alas, cause it was lovely. "Straightforward" Google Maps calls it... and they ain't wrong.

5&6. on Manette St. I'm still struggling with this one ... maybe I need to go again (hint, hint). The design is riotous fun (though loud Italian TV in the toilet is...less fun) with friendly staff who made me a desperately needed espresso martini even though it wasn't on the menu (which... is both great and yet simultaneously frustrating). And the menu is pastas and pizza, which you can't go wrong with, it's just hard to go really, really right with. And then of course the desserts... well you can guess what they were. And yes... it is expensive. So, let's put it this way. You know what you're going to get, don't complain, and just embrace.

The magical Hotel has come, sprinkling beauty and fun in the centre of Soho. Dear Jackie is the basement restaurant, Bar Jackie the ground floor cafe/bar (5), and Flute the top floor cocktail bar. (4)
Whilst still bedding in, the staff have all proved to be delightful in all venues. The interiors are fun, with outrageous wallpapers, photos from owner Noel Hayden's family circus history, and impressive lighting.
Whilst a tight menu in the restaurant (albeit almost impossible to read lighting) is perfect for dinner with a friend, it's honestly the cocktails in Flute that are heaven. I mean no, no one is allowed to go there, I want it exclusively for me. *sigh* I don't think I'm going to get my wish. And after all, the Broadwick is good for Soho, and that's good for all of us

Nibbles around Soho
1. in Kingly Court. Korean/Californian cuisine on the top floor. Very rich, and very naughty, with delicious sauces on almost everything. Order less than you'd think!
2. on Kingly St. Umm... salt beef in a salad roll? Well yeah, that's a little unusual. But for a quick healthy lunch, it can't be faulted
3. .co Soho Social on Berwick St provides a desirable breakfast/brunch menu, and a short, but good list of cocktails. Already packed, this is going to be a hot spot.
4. on Kingly St, perfect two-bite donuts. Flavour is king.

Catching up Around Soho
1. , everyone's favourite Lockdown memory, finally got a Soho location on Broadwick St. Still good.
2. .restaurant on Moor St. Friendly staff, tasty biryani. You can thank me later guys, for sitting in the window and driving all the lunch trade.
3. Coffee at on Gt Marlborough St. Nice view... coffee not what you'd expect.
4. in St Annes Court. Mini chain that started in 2005 in the US, comes to London in numerous locations. It'll do for a quick lunch.
5. And finally... . The little child of opens in Golden Square. What to say? Yes great service and an interior perhaps inspired more by Kit Kemp than anything else. No "press here for champagne", and cocktails were a little underwhelming. The realisation that the only main course is roast chicken (with potato variants) is a little [freeze]. Fun, yes. Tasty, yes. Expensive, hell yes. Good place to take others, as long as they are paying.

Lunching around Soho...
1. Sometimes you really "win" at cocktails. My pina colada vs my friends daiquiri on St Anne's Court. Not sure how long it will last in this doomed location, but reasonably priced Jamaican food (minus the curry goat!) was good on taste.
2. While there are a few indoor seats at , its mostly take-away. The pasta is fresh, but alas it's not cheap.
3. a stylish cafe aligned with fashion brand . Alas, we came to late for the pastries (hence outside pic only), but coffee was good, and tables were good place to mix with the youngsters.
4. There can never be enough Mexican restaurants. Alas it's hard to photograph a burrito! So here's a frozen margarita from Gt Windmill St's

Let's be honest, COVID, Brexit and everything else... you expect to lose all those favourite little places to disappear. But oh my... is still around. Let's face it, a place that sells cocktails and desserts is so frigging AWESOME. The perfect end to a night out.

Two fascinating openings in Soho, and worth the visit.
1 & 2: .restaurant on Beak St. From the creator of , comes a whole bundle of delicious dishes, and ridiculously massive steaks to be shared (ha!). Almost anything here is good, from the ridiculously sounding prawns and cheese (see pic 2), to the smoked potatoes... to the desserts which I need to go back for. Staff amazing, space a little bit echo-y, yes expensive. But amazing. Go. Go now.

3&4: in Newport Place. Yes, we are definitely getting swamped by Instagram-able Yakitori restaurants at the moment, but if there is one to go to, then this is the one.
Slapdash service, and an interior that is good in some places... and not in others. But it's a reasonably priced meal, with a range of meats to cook, and some sushi for starters.

A quick run around Soho.
1. ice cream made from the root of an orchid, I kid you not. Slightly chewy, and limited in flavours but... still worth a scoop or two.
2. new little Italian on the main strip. Sumptuous interior from the people who brought you , with standard, inexpensive and competent Italian. Perfect for lunches
3. The Grand on Glasshouse St (part of ) so you know exactly what you're getting... more attractive from the outside.

It took 4 years for this version of to actually turn into reality. The original site over in Chinatown lasted from 1926 to 2006, and this site on the less than impressive alleyway between Soho Square and Bateman St (Bateman Buildings apparently) was initially conceived by Corbin & King, before they were forced out of the Wolesley Group. The new owners completed on the task, delivering a beautifully styled restaurant (see pics 1 & 3), in the awkward site.
So here it is... and here we are... and we're looking around wondering where the customers are, and who is going to wander by? it isn't.
Yes, lovely staff, a nice wine, loved the octopus starter, and even the fish & chips were good. But so many items are eye-wateringly expensive that it feels like it should be two restaurants.
Make sure someone else is paying...

With the death last year of famed Soho restaurateur Andrew Edmunds, one wondered if the idea of a "local" restaurant in Soho still has legs.
Enter just a little way up Lexington St. Formerly Aurora, and formerly ... other places I think, but 23 years into writing these reviews, it's OK if I forget one or two places.
Despite the awkward website, and the app available only on Apple devices, I finally got a reservation and wangled a table out in the tiny courtyard.
Our sweet Mexican waitress got us through to the good cocktails (the Rita, naturally), and whilst my pasta of the day was good, it was a magical cornbread and poached peach for dessert that made me leave in a happy mood.
