The copper beech near the road has turned properly now, and it's the sort of thing that stops you on the walk past. All that red against the pines, and a good drift of leaves already down across the tarmac. The moss on the old stone wall is having its own quiet moment down at the bottom of it all.

Furgus has a routine on morning walks. He bombs off ahead, finds a spot in the heather, sits down, and waits for me with a look that suggests I've let him down. This was just after seven, the light still blue and the heather gone to its late October brown. He held the pose for about four seconds before something in the young firs needed investigating.

This is one of our kingsize rooms, and that spot in the corner by the window is quietly the best seat in the house. The old wicker chair, a cushion or two, and a view straight out to the trees. Guests always seem to gravitate to it with a cup of something.

Good morning. Furgus and I went round Glentruim first thing, a run for me and something nearer a sprint for him, ball firmly in mouth the entire way. The mist stayed put in the low ground under the hill and the bracken's gone fully orange, so every stretch of the track looked a bit different from the last. Hope you've a good day ahead, whatever you're up to.

This is one of our kingsize rooms with its own en-suite. The oak floor doesn't look like much first thing, but give it an hour and the sun comes round to that window and warms the whole thing up. There's a fair bit of space to spread out too, which guests always seem pleased about once they're through the door.

Set the alarm far too early and drove the twenty minutes over to Loch Insh for a swim before the sun was properly up. Swiped through these in order and you get the whole thing: stars still hanging over the moored boats, the hills slowly turning into shapes, and that orange strip arriving just as we were talking ourselves out of it. The water in October is honest about the season. We lasted a few minutes, which felt heroic at the time and a bit daft afterwards. If you fancy it during a stay, the beach by the boats is the easy way in.

Went out for a run round Glentruim after dark tonight, which sounds more heroic than it is. Mostly a jog with a headtorch and a lot of puddles. Came back up the drive to find the moon over the trees and Muckle Meadow lit up like a lantern across the meadow. If you've ever wondered what the pod looks like from the outside at night, there you go.

The colour up top only lasts a minute or two before the blue swallows it back up, so you're never quite sure you'll get it. This evening it held just long enough, and the river down below caught a bit of it on the way through the fields.

The Falls of Truim were in a lazy mood when I passed. After a dry spell the water pools up dark and glassy between the rocks and barely seems to move at all. A few days of proper rain and it's a proper tumble again, but I quite like it like this too.

This fella marched up the track and parked himself about a foot from the camera, head tilted like he was trying to make out what I was. No bread, no fuss, just a very direct duck deciding whether I was worth his time. He wandered off eventually, none the wiser.
