Which guests have visit the castle whilst staying at Swainby Hideaways 🏰

Yorkshire’s lost village with a ruined castle, ancient church and eerie local legend. 🏰✨

Hidden above Swainby on the edge of the North York Moors lies one of North Yorkshire’s most intriguing forgotten places.

Whorlton was once a thriving medieval village, believed to have Saxon roots and recorded in the Domesday Book as Wirueltune. Today, the settlement has almost vanished, leaving behind grassy earthworks, the remains of Whorlton Castle and the atmospheric Old Church of the Holy Cross.

Local legend gives the lost village a darker twist. According to folklore, Whorlton was cursed after villagers wronged a mysterious stranger, who later revealed himself to be a powerful sorcerer. Other tales suggest plague may have emptied the village, though some historians believe people gradually moved downhill to Swainby as industry developed there.

The castle itself dates back to the 12th century and was later rebuilt by John Darcy, Lord Darcy of Knayth. Its striking gatehouse still stands, complete with historic family coats of arms, while the surrounding fields reveal traces of the old village, including house platforms, garden plots and an ancient sunken road.

Nearby, the Grade I-listed medieval church sits among yew trees, with parts dating back to the 11th century. Though largely abandoned after a newer church was built in Swainby, it still adds to the haunting atmosphere of this hilltop site.

Tucked just off the A172, around six miles south-west of Stokesley, Whorlton is the kind of place many people drive past without ever knowing it is there.

A ruined castle, a vanished village and a centuries-old curse — this hidden corner of North Yorkshire has all the ingredients of a proper local mystery.
