You know you think it every year… “Next Christmas, we’re doing the markets”? If that’s you, this is your sign to make it happen.
A Christmas market river cruise is the easiest way to do it properly. You unpack once and wake up in a new festive city. No hopping between hotels. No train timetables. No transfers. No suitcase-on-cobbles situations.
The itinerary in that I keep recommending is the Danube route: Vienna – Bratislava – Budapest. It works so well because each stop feels genuinely different. Vienna is all classic, grand Christmas atmosphere. Bratislava is smaller, calmer, and usually the surprise favourite. Budapest finishes with a big, twinkly, end-of-trip wow.
