What a backdrop for a bike race!

Photographed this afternoon during Stage 4 of the Tour of Britain as the peloton climbed Grinton Moor. With the heather in full bloom across the Swaledale moorland and the patchwork fields of the Yorkshire Dales stretching out below, the landscape was every bit as impressive as the racing itself.

A brilliant advertisement for cycling and for one of England's most beautiful valleys.

This evening’s eclipse.

Cloud cover hid most of the eclipse tonight, drifting across the sky just when the light tried to break through.

But those brief moments were enough to change the valley. The unusual glow picked out the road in Arkengarthdale and the stone walls around it, giving the landscape a different kind of presence.

Even without a clear view of the eclipse, the light made the dale feel still and otherworldly for a while.

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, earlier this year we welcomed a few hens to our garden, (back when everything was beautifully green!). They’ve been keeping us well supplied with fresh eggs ever since.

So, while they’re still laying, we’ll leave a few free-range eggs for you to enjoy during your stay . Whether they’re scrambled for breakfast or tucked into a picnic, they’re a little taste of country life.

If you’ve been thinking about escaping to the Dales, we still have a little midweek availability in August. Come for the peace, the views and the fresh air… and great eggs !

Our guests have plenty of seating options, each with amazing views. Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee, having that al fresco pizza, soaking up the sunshine, or winding down at sunset, there’s always a great spot to sit back and enjoy it all.

Our Cuckoos arrived back in May. It’s always a pleasure to hear the male birds calling. They are a declining species in the UK but we are lucky that they can still be found on the moorland fringes at Hurst.

After a long journey from their winter quarters in Africa they make their home here. The female cuckoo will find and lay her single egg in the nest of another bird, often a Meadow Pipit at Hurst. When the young cuckoo hatches out it will heave the remaining Meadow Pipet eggs over the side of the nest and the poor meadow pipit parents are left to feed the young cuckoo. The site of the Pipits feeding the young cuckoo is a site to behold as it dwarfs its surrogate parents !

They are a magical bird and herald the arrival
of Summer !
