What an absolutely glorious day here in Reeth! ☀️

The sun is shining, the sky is a perfect, cloudless blue, and the old stone of The Kings Arms is looking spectacular in the morning light, as you can see in picture.

Days like this are exactly why High Row is the best place to be. The benches are out, the umbrellas are up, and it is shaping up to be the perfect afternoon for a cold pint in the sun. We are already getting everything ready to welcome the hikers coming off the Reeth Three Peaks circuit for some well-earned, informal high dining.

Lisa is prepping inside for a busy service featuring the new menu, and the kitchen is packed with incredible, hyper-local Dales produce. Even Coco has already claimed the best sunbeam right by the front door! 🐾

Whether you're out mountain biking, conquering Fremington Edge, or just fancy a scenic drive through the Dales, pop by and soak up the sunshine with us. The doors are open, and the welcome is as warm as the weather.

See you out there! 🍻

If you’re looking for a single malt with serious depth, you can't go wrong with my all-time favorite: the Glenmorangie Lasanta.

It’s an incredible sherry-cask finished whisky that hits all the right notes—warm spice, dark chocolate, and honeycomb. It's exactly the kind of pour you want when the evening winds down. I’ve put together a full review breaking down why this one stands above the rest.

Where the Drystone Walls Meet the Sky

There is a corner of the world where time doesn’t exactly stop, but it certainly takes its boots off and stays a while. Welcome to the Yorkshire Dales, a landscape carved by glaciers, bound by ancient stone, and bursting with a vibrant, unyielding life that you simply won't find anywhere else.

If you think the north of England is all moody greys and muted tones, you’ve never seen the Dales in full bloom.

A Canvas of Unexpected Colour

When spring and summer roll across the hills, the Dales erupt into a spectacular palette:

The Hay Meadows: Places like Reeth become living impressionist paintings. They are a riot of purple wood cranesbill, bright yellow buttercups, and deep green clover—protected and nurtured just as they were hundreds of years ago.

The Heather Moorland: Come August, the high fells turn into a breathtaking sea of vibrant, deep purple.

The Limestone Scar: Brilliant white limestone pavements cut through the emerald hills under a stark, shifting blue sky.

Traditions Time Forgot

While the rest of the world rushes headlong into the digital age, the Dales quietly holds onto the rhythms of the past. Step into a village square or a stone-walled pub, and you’ll find vibrant traditions that have been ironed out of existence elsewhere.

The Clatter of Morris Dancers: High summer brings the rhythmic stomp of clogs, the flash of handkerchiefs, and the fierce jingling of bells. Morris dancers take over the cobblestones, reviving centuries-old dances to the tune of a solo fiddle or accordion—a joyful, eccentric spectacle of pure English folk heritage.

The Quoits Pitch: On any given evening, you might hear the sharp clink of iron hitting a steel pin. The ancient game of quoits is still fiercely contested on traditional clay beds outside local pubs, keeping alive a pastime that has entertained Dalesmen for generations.

Drystone Walling: The iconic grey ribbons that lace the landscape aren't held together by mortar, but by pure skill. It’s an ancient craft passed down through families, a jigsaw puzzle played with tons of rock.

That Irresistible Yorkshire Charm

But the true heart of the Dales isn't the scenery; it’s the people. There is a distinct, warm-hearted magic to the folk who call these hills home.

"It’s a place where 'Nowt's a bother,' a stranger is just a friend you haven't had a pint with yet, and a proper brew solves absolutely everything."

Yorkshire charm isn't flashy. It’s dry wit over a pint of local cask ale by a roaring peat fire. It’s a cheerful "Ey up, love" shouted across a windswept market square. It’s an authentic, down-to-earth pride in the land, the livestock, and the community.

Life here moves to the beat of the seasons, dictated by the weather and the sheep rather than the clock. It’s a place of rugged beauty, deep roots, and a colourful spirit that stays with you long after you've left.

I went for a walk in a summer shower last night,

There's just something about walking in summer showers,

There's just something about walking in the dales.

Is it the sound of the rain on the leaves?

Is it being wet but still warm,

There just something about walking in the dales,

Every single day.
