Silverwood Scout Campsite

We believe no Scouts should be charged the proposed Tourist Tax for overnight stays.

The cost and admin would mean fewer young people will get to enjoy the benefits of camping and nights away.

Thank you to all those who have challenged this proposal - including volunteers who have written to their local Mayors and MPs and those MPs who have raised this in Parliament.

If you agree with this concern, please write to your local Mayor and MP and ask for:
- A national exemption for under-18s to protect youth development opportunities.
- A national exemption for charity-run hostels, campsites, activity centres, and meeting places, recognising that they’re distinct from commercial accommodation providers.
- No further administrative burdens to be placed on small-scale, volunteer-run facilities.

After review and consultation with other organisations, the fire ban has been lifted with immediate effect.

The use of fire will remain under review and if it needs to reimplemented due to hot weather, this will be communicated appropriately.

🔥 Open Fire Ban 🚫

Due to the raising temperatures and following guidance from the Met Office, the Scout Association and several other NGOs, we are placing an immediate ban on all open fires at Silverwood.

This includes but is not limited to charcoal/wood fired BBQs, alter fires, and fire pits/drums.

We appreciate that this will come as a disappointment to some groups, however this decision has not been taken lightly and is aimed at keeping all our guests safe.

All groups who were planning on cooking on open fires will need to make alternative arrangements. Gas cookers, gas BBQs and gas griddles are still permitted. Please take extra precautions when using these and ensure they are raised off the ground.

A moving ceremony at Silverwood Scout Campsite today, marking 110 years since the Battle of the Somme.

The Barnsley Pals trained at Silverwood, and it was an honour to remember their service together in the place where it began.

Our campsite has been buzzing with energy since Sixers and Seconders from Royston, Wombwell and Pen*stone arrived yesterday. Everyone’s settled in for another night on site, and even with the mixed weather it’s been a fun, lively and memorable weekend all round.

They’ll be closing camp tomorrow, but it’s been fantastic having you all here — thanks for bringing such great spirit to Silverwood.

We are looking forward to supporting this event in a few weeks time taking place in the chapel.

The history of Silverwood is truly special and it is important we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

If you wish to join us, please arrive by 7pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

Join us for a Service of Remembrance on Thursday, 6th November at 7:30pm at Silverwood Scout Campsite. We’ll gather for a candlelit service to honour those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Refreshments will follow - all volunteers welcome, uniform preferred.
