Why is it that the storms with the crap names seem to do all the damage? Back in April storm" Dave" took out our original stretch tent. This weekend storm" Boelo" ( who ?) took down our replacement. This time, some quick thinking and judicious parking by the team meant no permanent damage was done . With the stretch tent gone its another sign that we are turning your favorite Summer destination into your favorite Winter destination
Heads up only One more "Friday Night Supper" and One more "Pizza in the Park Event" this Saturday (With live music from house band MYM ) to go .Some wintery tweaks coming to the menu and on the plus side, our Log fires will be lit over the weekend ! Whats not to love, see you soon .

OK Hands up, Who has a" Witch Bottle" in their house? Most of the main buildings here at the farm date from around the early 1800s but the tradition of having a "Witch Bottle" in the apex of a roof continues. Stemming from traditions in Folklore from the 16th/ 17th century A "Witch Bottle" is left protruding from the apex of a roof so when Witches attempt to make entry into you house they get trapped in the bottle, and prevented from doing so. There are many iterations of "Witch Bottles" and how they are used around Europe and the Americas
For the disbelievers , they clearly work, as I have never yet witnessed a Witch in our buildings ( Insert 1970s style Mother -in-Law Joke here ) See if you can spot our "Witch Bottles" next time you visit

Some very good news from Thursday is that we passed our annual TB test ! I could rant for hours about DERFAs approach to the TB problem ,but for those who watch" Clarksons Farm" next season It will be an eye opener for you. After the nail bar treatment when the cows come in, they are all treated to a large bolus. Unlike us a cow has four stomachs that each do a different job This large pill is given to the cow and sits in its first stomach the Rumen slowly dissolving over the period of the next few months, releasing vital trace elements, Vits and Mins to keep the cow in good health This is Walzing Matilda getting her bolus
Its a bit like your morning Yakult .......but without the wrestling and the application gun

Yesterday I sat down and posted my message I just thought it was the right time for a clarification I walked away and thought no more about it When I returned and opened the post I was greeted with a tidal wave from all and you and your good wishes. Quite unexpected and a little overwhelming. It gave Sarah and I such a Boost Thank you all for your kindness and taking the trouble. It means a lot

However we need to talk about more important things now as It "Nail Bar Time" for the cows Before yarding we check all the cows feet The Hot dry summer can play havoc with their hooves Call in Chris the cow equivalent of a Chiropodist /Podiatrist. Feet are checked and trimmed to produce a cow that stands on four flat level hooves at each corner

Looks dramatic but totally painless for the animal Just like having your toenails trimmed

I try to keep my personal life away from any social media posts , but I feel this is now the right time to address things .People have noticed New Lodge Farms abscence at various summer events and that sighting of me in particular have dwindled somewhat over the summer months . Rumours and speculation abound, so for clarity here is the story
In April, out of the blue I was diagnosed with a Throat and Neck Cancer. The Good news .The type of cancer I have has a high success rate after treatment ,and we caught it early .The Bad news is where it is situated means the treatment is somewhat gruelling. .With summer being taken up by endless ops, scans, biopsies, more scans, more ops spread between specialists at 7 different hospitals
( Including a 5 day stay in Peterborough City hospital with Sepsis which was a bit of a close run thing by all accounts !)
.I am now half way through my final six weeks of Daily Chemo and Radiotherapy commuting to Newmark every day (They couldnt find a Tube that I would fit in ,so they are using one designed for a Horse ) ( That was a joke!) All this has clearly put some pressure on what we can do as a business hence the changes to some aspect of what you see

I am doing fine, and I will be back very soon and I am rareing to go.
You will spot me at my comeback .I will be the little thin bald bloke in the corner

To all the amazing people who have helped me in any way during this time ,and for the kindness and care you have shown me the real thanks will come later

In the meantime

Love to you all,
See you Soon

Simon

Top Tip If you want to build a beautiful and durable re cycled roof, you need to start with a 170 million year old material . World famous Collyweston slate ( mined 6 miles from the Farm ) is made from Jurrassic limestone .Traditionally split by water and ice combinations to form the slates . Its use is dated back to Roman times. This "new" roof is being constructed from reclaimed slates from one of our farm buildings . The slates have already served us well, by keeping us protected from the elements since the 1850s !

Another in the short series of what we find at New Lodge Farm in Autumn What about this beauty from our visiting Fallow Deer population? ( we know its a fallow deer from the antlers shape, Fallow are the only deer other than moose to grow palmate /hand shaped Antlers ) Incredibly they grow these impressive structures each year
Used as weapons when duelling for the ladies ,and for marking territory in the rutting season, They are painlessly shed in the Autumn to allow easier living in the cold winter months They are then used to decorate our Farm Shop or handed to our local stick maker to produce a fine handled country accessory

Last weekend we hosted the "Rockers" a charming bunch of chaps who had two good rideouts from the Farm on their beautiful british bikes .This weekend coming its the turn of the" Mods" with a return visit from the Awfully Pleasant Scooter Association here for Breakfast on Saturday , Riding out on their equally beautiful Lambrettas and Vespas then returning 3.30pm and hopefully joining us for Early Pizza ( I did hear a suggestion that perhaps next year we ought to combine both rallies on the same day and move it to Skegness beach on the August Bank Holiday and pretend its 1965 all over again) 🤣🤣
