🍂 An October worth lingering for in Purbeck
October is a lovely time to explore here. The paths are quieter, the views change with the light, and there’s plenty to plan a few days around.
🚂 Swanage Railway – On 24 October, Flying Scotsman returns for journeys through the Purbeck countryside. One for anyone who loves the sight and sound of a steam train.
🎬 Purbeck Film Festival – From 16 October to 1 November, films pop up in venues across the area, including the Rex in Wareham and the Mowlem in Swanage. Choose a screening, enjoy supper locally and make an evening of it.
🏰 Corfe Castle – Throughout October, the Home and Hearth exhibition reveals small objects from everyday life in the medieval castle. On Fridays, you can also meet the stonemason volunteers and explore the handling collection.
🦅 RSPB Arne – Set aside a morning to wander the heath, woodland and shore, with binoculars if you have them. It’s a wonderful place to slow down and see what autumn brings.
📖 Hardy country – On 20 October, there’s a guided walk from Max Gate through countryside Thomas Hardy knew well. Later in the month, Hardy’s Cottage and Max Gate will be dressed with autumn flowers; there’s apple pressing at the cottage on 29 October too.
There’s no need to fit it all into a weekend. Stay a little longer and you can mix a day out with a leisurely walk, a favourite pub and some time simply enjoying the view.
Ailwood Farm Stay, a quiet base in the Purbeck countryside with two adult-only studios. If October has you thinking of a few days away, you can find us here: https://www.ailwoodfarmtoo.co.uk
Do check the organisers’ latest details and book the guided or special events before setting off.
