The top drawer
There was a drawer in my grandmother's chest, in the big sala. It was the top drawer and inside it she kept an old wallet.
As a child, I found that wallet fascinating. It was full of little things: photographs, papers, receipts, pieces of a life I didn't really understand yet.
I had no idea then that these little pieces of paper would one day become part of the story of Haloyiannis.

These vines are almost 90 years old, planted by my grand grandfather.
On Andros they are traditionally known as anedrada. It is claimed the name goes back to the time the Venetians ruled the island.
But most important is how naturally they belong to the house.
In spring, the leaves gradually return. By summer they create a deep, cool shade over the yard. Then as autumn comes and the days become shorter, the leaves fall away. The winter light comes back into the house.
Nothing has to be switched on or adjusted. The vines simply follow the seasons.

For almost one century, they have been doing what they were meant to do and we are pleased to let them continue.

The corridor in Haloyiannis is long and quiet, as it was the way back in time.
Handmade tiles, marble steps and a wooden handmade door that rises almost to the ceiling.
Along the wall sits a piece of furniture that came from Alexandria almost two hundred years ago. Nearby the gramophone still reminds us of another time.
We restored these items, not because they were valuable in the conventional sense, but because they belonged here. They are the tangible proof of the intangible time that fools all of us.
And when you walk through this corridor you just know...time is right here, right now with you.
