Proposal #6 for a one-day trip in our neighbourhood

Memorial Center "Nikola Tesla" Smiljan – from Seline 1 hour
Tesla was born in a parochial family, in a house next to the Orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul that was built in 1765. Experts of the Conservation Institute of the SR of Croatia restored the house in 1956 and it was opened as a Memorial Museum.
In 1964, the Memorial Museum came under the management of the Museum of Lika in Gospić, which worked on the preservation of this cultural good for years. The whole memorial area was declared a monument of nature in 1976.
To commemorate the 130th anniversary of Tesla's birth, the birth house was restored with the help of the Parliament of the SR of Croatia and was given to the Museum of Lika in Gospić to use in 1986.
The memorial area of Nikola Tesla was registered as a cultural good in 2005 and entered into the Registry of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia.
At the proposal of the Croatian Government the President of Croatia declared 2006 the year of Nikola Tesla. The restored birth house, its new museum exhibition, the surroundings and the accompanying exterior monuments as well as the newly built facilities together comprise the present-day Memorial Center "Nikola Tesla" Smiljan. It was opened on July 10th, 2006, on the 150th anniversary of Tesla's birth.

Proposal #5 for a one-day trip in our neighbourhood

Plitvica lake – from Seline 1,5 hour

Plitvice Lakes is the oldest and largest national park in the Republic of Croatia. The park is situated in the mountainous region of Croatia, between the Mala Kapela mountain range in the west and northwest, and the Lička Plješivica mountain range to the southeast. Administratively, the park falls within two counties: Lika-Senj (90.7%) and Karlovac (9.3%).
With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, and already on 8 April 1949, it was proclaimed Croatia’s first national park. The process of tufa formation, which results in the building of the tufa, or travertine, barriers and resulted in the creation of the lakes, is the outstanding universal value, for which the Plitvice Lakes were internationally recognised on 26 October 1979 with their inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 1997, the boundaries of the national park were expanded, and today it covers an area just under 300 km2.
The park is primarily covered in forest vegetation, with smaller areas under grasslands. The most attractive part of the park – the lakes – cover just under 1% of the total park area.
The lake system is comprised of 16 named and several smaller unnamed lakes, cascading one into the next. Due to the geological substrate and characteristic hydrogeological conditions, the lake system has been divided into the Upper and Lower lakes. The twelve lakes forming the Upper Lakes are: Prošćansko jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko jezero, Malo jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino jezero, Gradinsko jezero, Burgeti and Kozjak. These lakes were formed on impermeable dolomite rock, and are larger, with more indented and gentler shores than the Lower Lakes. The Lower Lakes, consisting of the lakes Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod, were formed in permeable limestone substrate, cut into a deep canyon with steep cliffs. The lakes end in the impressive waterfalls Sastavci, with the Korana River springing under the base of the falls.

Proposal #3 for a one-day trip in our neighborhood

ZRMANJA RIVER
Zrmanja river is often called “Beauty and the beast” and it is one of the most beautiful Croatian rivers. Zrmanja river flows through rough karst landscape and creates many amazing waterfalls. Before the river flows into the sea, it flows through a magnificent canyon that attracts many visitors with its beauty and this location has served as a backdrop for world-famous films about Winnetou.
The river Zrmanja is a river that springs in the southern part of Lika region. The river is 69 km long and on its upper course it flows through fertile karst fields. Further downriver are 6 narrow canyons, of which the most famous and most impressive is the canyon on the last 2 km of the river that stretches all the way to the point where the river flows into the Novigrad Sea. In this canyon, the river Zrmanja is surrounded by cliffs that reach a height of up to 200 m. This canyon is protected as a significant geomorphological nature site. If you take a closer look, you will be able to see the remains of the fortress “Pržunac”, which is considered to be the last dungeon of the Croatian queen Jelena.
It is possible to combine a visit to Zrmanja and Krupa in one trip because they are in the same area.

PROPOSAL #1 for a one-day trip in our neighborhood

Paklenica National Park encompasses the areas of the impressive canyons of Velika and Mala Paklenica, vertically incised into the southern slopes of the Velebit Mountain. Composed of karst features, the Paklenica park abounds in highly varied rocky “sculptures”, which alternate with wooded valleys and mountain meadows. It hides in its bosom the opulent beauty of the underground, as best exemplified by the cave of Manita Peć. Orchids and lilies in green glades, endemic blue-bells on sheer cliffs, dense forests of black pine, and incredibly varied species of butterflies and birds are all only a part of the rich flora and fauna that exist in the Park.
All the full beauties of Paklenica can be experienced only by hiking, and in recognition of this, over 150 km of hiking paths have been made. The particular attraction of this area is the closeness of the seacoast, which allows you to experience all the charms of the mountain and the sea in one place.
Paklenica is also considered to be among the most famous European climbing centres. The climbing area is settled at very beginning of the canyon Velika Paklenica. The climbing site has over 400 climbing routes of various difficulty levels and lengths and the climbing season in Paklenica lasts from early spring until late autumn.
The name Paklenica probably derives from black pine sap called “paklina”, which the locals used in traditional medicine, for wound treatment, for light and for coating of wooden boats.
