Dry toilets are an ecological and economical alternative to conventional toilets because they do not require water to operate. Dry toilets can be used to ensure access to safe and resilient sanitation facilities around the world – especially in water-stressed areas – and in places requiring humanitarian assistance. Dry toilets provide a solution for managing f***l sludge and water pollution. Human waste from dry toilets can also be turned into natural fertilizer and support local agriculture.

Dry toilets do not require water to function. Therefore, drinking water sources are neither used nor polluted. Dry toilets are a cheap, easy-to-use and quick-to-implement solution that effectively addresses water scarcity and pollution. Dry toilets are essential to address the lack of water and sanitation infrastructure in water-stressed areas. Dry toilets improve user hygiene and better manage biological waste.

Toilet waste can be composted and used as organic fertilizer instead of chemicals, the use of which contributes to soil depletion worldwide. Therefore, dry toilets are also a sustainable way to combat chemical pollution and soil nutrient depletion worldwide.

The Natural Resources Conservation Agency (Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam; BKSDA) of Maluku Province released 55 wild Tanimbar cockatoos (Cacatua goffiniana) in the Tanimbar forest. The release was carried out in the Lorulung Village Forest, Wertamrian District, Tanimbar Islands Regency (KKT), Maluku. The activity is part of the conservation and ecosystem restoration efforts carried out to protect biodiversity in the area.

The release process was carried out after a series of recovery and rehabilitation to ensure that the animals were ready to return to nature. This activity not only aims to return the animals to their habitat, but also to increase public awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and biodiversity.

The BKSDA also conducted outreach to the community regarding the handling and management of Tanimbar cockatoos in the Maluku Islands and the use of rescue cages for these animals. Hopefully, the public will be more aware of the maintenance of endemic animals in Maluku.

One war that Jam'iyyatul Qurra wal Huffazh Nahdlatul Ulama (JQH-NU) will continue to wage is the war against all activities and policies that worsen global climate change. At the Multaqo meeting, JQH-NU Chairman Drs. KH. Saifullah Ma’shum, M.Si., said that, “As climate change is causing major disasters and diseases affecting us all, JQH-NU must be at the forefront of promoting the teachings of the Qur'an to protect nature, the gift of Allah for humanity, in the face of climate change caused by human activity. For the betterment of human life and the world in which we live, Allah's guidance in the form of the Qur'an needs to be preserved and applied.”

In parallel with the 2023 fatwa of the Indonesian Muslim Clerics Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia; MUI) number 86 issued against climate change, JQH-NU emphasizes the importance of environmental conservation from an Islamic perspective. The fatwa declares that actions contributing to environmental destruction, such as deforestation, pollution, and overexploitation of natural resources, are haram (forbidden), and urges the Muslim community to adopt sustainable practices and take an active role in mitigating climate change.

With government support, JQH-NU intends to generate revenue for various community, environmental, and religious programs. This move is also part of Nahdlatul Ulama’s broader strategy to involve diverse societal groups in the country's economic development, leveraging their networks and influence to drive growth and improve welfare at the grassroots level.

Eggs in general have complete nutritional content and contain all the nutrients the brain needs, especially eggs produced from cage-free or cage-free farms. Cage-free eggs are produced from well-cared for chickens on healthy, clean and hygienic cage-free farms.

Cage-free farms implement a rearing system where the chickens can play and eat as much as they like. Chickens can also choose a place to lay eggs that they feel comfortable with. Eggs from cage-free farms tend to be healthier, cleaner and more hygienic. The eggs produced are free of Salmonella and E.coli bacteria, without chemical residues and antibiotics.

Therefore, cage-free farms are also required to process their own food in order to maintain the quality of chicken food. Chicken food must be vegetable or herbal based. That is the difference between free-range and conventional cage farming. Cage-free farms really pay attention to the quality of chicken feed in order to maintain the quality of the products produced.

28/08/2024

You might think “free-range” meat comes from happy animals, but in reality, the label doesn't guarantee that the farm meets animal welfare standards. When the average person thinks of “free-roaming” beef, they tend to imagine farms with pastures dotted with beautiful black and white spotted cows, roaming and grazing to their heart's content.

In everyday usage, “free-range” refers to animals that roam freely in the open, especially in fields and pastures that suit their biological needs. Unfortunately, on many “free-range” farms, this definition rarely matches reality.

According to the USDA, meat qualifies as “free range meat” if the producer proves that the animals had free and continuous access to the outdoors for more than 50 percent of their lives. However, the Food Safety and Inspection Service does not provide a clear definition of the term “free-roaming” or related terms such as cage-free, pasture-raised, free-roaming, or cage-free. This gives producers wide latitude in how they raise animals. The animals can spend almost all of their time outdoors or can be raised primarily in cramped conditions with some limited access points to small outdoor areas that may be difficult to access.

22/08/2024

President Joko Widodo has emphasized on various occasions that the Indonesian Capital City (Ibukota Nusantara; IKN) will use 100 percent green energy. Green energy is a type of energy that comes from natural resources or safe materials, so it does not produce greenhouse gas emissions that are harmful to the environment.

That way, all vehicles operating at IKN, including public transportation, will use electrical energy. Moreover, the government will also build a 50 megawatt (MW) solar power plant (PLTS) in IKN.

One area that has abundant renewable energy potential is East Kalimantan Province. This is because the potential for green energy in East Kalimantan reaches 34,105 GW. This PLTS will stand on an area of 80 hectares with 21,600 solar panels. So that energy can be allocated efficiently and stably, the government will utilize hydrogen energy and the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The government has also provided public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU) at IKN to support the main means of transportation.

19/08/2024

The issue of waste is still a big problem that is handled by many regions in Indonesia. Often, rubbish piles up and is left in open areas.  However, there is an area that manages waste so that it is not left piled up in open spaces, and instead produces large profits. The area is Banyumas Regency in Central Java.

In the Banyumas area there are no longer operational landfills or final disposal sites (TPA). So, where is the waste processed? They are collected at every integrated waste processing site (TPST) or waste hangars in every sub-district. Thus, the waste in Banyumas is only processed in six TPSTs and an Environment and Education Based Final Processing Site (TPA BLE). With 29 community self-help groups (KSM) as managers.

Organic waste is used as compost and maggot feed. Used plastic bottles are also resold for recycling. For maggots, Banyumas can produce 3.5 tons of maggots per day. From this KSM, around 9 percent of the remaining waste goes to TPA BLE, which is an environmental and education-based waste processing site. Here, inorganic waste is processed into refused derived fuel (RDF) as a substitute for coal for factories, and can also be used as plastic paving blocks.
