It is with great sadness that County Roscommon Ploughing mourns the passing of our President, Michael (Christy) Neilan, M**f, Castlecoote, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 6th, 2026, in his 97th year.

Christy was a founding member of County Roscommon Ploughing, a lifelong ploughing enthusiast and competitor in the Vintage category, and a remarkable man of leadership, commitment and dedication.

A true stalwart of the ploughing, Christy was always there. Before our events, he was on site helping with preparations and marking out plots. He was also present at this yearโ€™s event, showing his lifelong commitment to the ploughing.

His knowledge of tillage and ploughing, gained through his years with Farrells of Castlecoote, was exceptional. His advice on suitable sites and venues and his practical knowledge were invaluable to our committee.
Christy was a regular and valued presence at meetings. Always smiling, laughing and full of humour, his opinions were highly respected. With Christy, there was no such thing as a problem โ€” he always found a way around an obstacle.
Well known throughout the ploughing fraternity, his passing is a huge loss to County Roscommon Ploughing, not only for his knowledge and experience, but for the friendship and companionship he gave so generously.
Christy loved our meetings and get-togethers, and over the years our committee became like a family to him โ€” and he became part of our family too.
We mourn his loss, but celebrate the wonderful life he shared so kindly with us. His legacy will live on in County Roscommon Ploughing and in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his daughter Ann, sons Sean, Tomรกs and Alan, extended family, neighbours and friends at this sad time.
May Christyโ€™s gentle soul rest in peace.
County Roscommon Ploughing will remember him with immense gratitude and affection โ€” a true gentleman, a great character, a passionate ploughman and a lifelong friend of the ploughing.

โœจ๐Ÿ† MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ALL-IRELAND PLOUGHING WINNERS! ๐Ÿ†โœจ

What a fantastic afternoon at the NPA Awards Banquet in the Tullamore Court Hotel yesterday, celebrating the achievements of competitors, families and supporters after an incredible year of ploughing. โค๏ธ๐Ÿšœ

We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Rachel Oโ€™Grady and Oisรญn Connolly at this yearโ€™s All-Ireland National Ploughing Championships. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

๐Ÿฅ‡ Rachel Oโ€™Grady โ€“ Gold Medal & 1st Place
Ladies Junior Loy Digging
What an achievement for Rachel, taking 1st place and Gold at her very first All-Ireland! ๐Ÿฅ‡
๐Ÿ‘ A truly remarkable accomplishment and a testament to her dedication, commitment and passion for the craft throughout the year.
Rachel was coached and supported in the lead-up to the competition by Pauline Lavin, whose guidance and encouragement were invaluable. On the day, the Ladies Junior Loy Digging is a solo event, making Rachelโ€™s first-place finish all the more impressive. ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿฅ‰ Oisรญn Connolly โ€“ Bronze Medal & 3rd Place
Novice Junior Conventional Tractor Ploughing
Another fantastic national result for Oisรญn, who took 3rd place and a Bronze Medal. This was his second time representing Roscommon at national level, and we are incredibly proud of his achievement.
A special mention to John Hanley, who coached and supported Oisรญn on the day. His experience, advice and encouragement were greatly appreciated. ๐Ÿ‘

Huge congratulations to both Rachel and Oisรญn for representing Roscommon with such pride and distinction. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’š

Congratulations also to their families and supporters who have been behind them throughout the year. It was lovely to celebrate together at yesterdayโ€™s NPA Awards Banquet, and weโ€™re delighted to share a few family photos from the afternoon. ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿฅ‚

Two fantastic young competitors, two brilliant national achievements, and plenty to be proud of!

Well done Rachel & Oisรญn โ€” we couldnโ€™t be prouder! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿšœ

A little shout-out from Roscommon to two young lads from Longford who really caught the eye at the National Ploughing Championships. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿšœ

It was great to see Killian Concannon from Ballymahon competing in the Junior Novice class, with his school friend Bernard Egan from Keenagh there coaching and supporting him.
What really stood out was just how young they both are โ€” two school friends from Ballymahon Secondary School, one competing and the other giving his time to coach and encourage him. You donโ€™t often see that at National level, and it was brilliant to see.
As a newly established outfit, it was hugely encouraging to see the enthusiasm, determination and teamwork they brought to the National stage. They got on with the job, gave it their best and showed plenty of grit and willingness to learn.

Bernard had already competed himself the previous day in the Under-21 Junior class, where he was awarded 4th place, and then came back to support his school friend. Fair play to him for that.

Itโ€™s young people like Killian and Bernard, starting out together at school, learning, competing and encouraging each other, who give great hope for the future of ploughing and the local clubs that keep it going.
Well done, lads. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿšœ Longford Ploughing Association

Keep up the good work โ€” you certainly stood out and deserve great credit.
From Roscommon to Longford โ€” fair play where fair play is due. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

๐ŸŽ‰ Huge congratulations to Damien Ahern from Cork East! ๐ŸŽ‰

What a fantastic achievement at the All-Ireland Championships, taking 1st place in the Vintage Classic section! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ‘

Damien will now go on to represent Ireland at European level next year โ€” a brilliant honour and one that is thoroughly deserved. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

Itโ€™s also lovely to see the connection with Roscommon. Damien kindly gave his time to coach Connor Fuery of Knockcroghery at the Roscommon Novice Match in the past, so itโ€™s especially nice to see him celebrating such a great success.

And what a photograph! ๐Ÿ“ธ
John Curren, your smile is nearly as big as the hole in the ozone layer! ๐Ÿ˜‚โ˜€๏ธ We can certainly feel the joy and pride coming through the picture.

Well done to John, Damien and Dave โ€” and congratulations to everyone who competed and took part in the National Ploughing Championships across all classes. There are winners in every class, but sometimes one particular photo just catches your eye and tells the whole story.

The smiles say it all โ€” the joy of the win, the pride in the achievement, and the happiness of sharing it together. ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ˜Š
Fair play to you all, and best of luck to Damien as he goes on to represent Ireland at European level next year! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‘

A brilliant achievement, and a lovely connection between Cork and Roscommon. โค๏ธ

Congratulations also to Gary Ireland, Co. Kilkenny, on taking 3rd place in the Reversible Class. Gary acquitted himself excellently throughout the competition. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿšœ

Well done to Oisรญn Connolly on a fantastic 3rd place finish! ๐Ÿ‘
A brilliant achievement for both competitors and a great reflection of the hard work, dedication and talent within Roscommon Ploughing.
