National Association of Regional Game Councils (NARGC)

National Association of Regional Game Councils (NARGC) The National Association of Regional Game Councils (NARGC) is the largest voluntary organisation. It is also a Seanad Nominating Body.

The Association has 25,500 members in 1050 Clubs spread throughout the country – one Club in almost every parish. It has enjoyed an increasing membership year on year for the past ten years with an average increase of 500 per annum. The Association co-ordinates the activities of its members and clubs through a regional structure comprising 28 regions. The NARCC also represents the interests of all

its members at both a national and international level. Since its establishment in 1968, the Association has been instrumental in the development of significant beneficial legislation since that time. Of particular note was The Wildlife Act 1976, The Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000, The Firearms Non-Residents Act 2000 etc. The NARGC has been to the forefront in leading challenges through the Courts against misuse and abuses of Ireland’s environmental and shooting legislation. The NARGC is at the forefront of conservation projects in Ireland with regional projects on the introduction of native grey partridge to suitable habitat, grouse projects that have received international recognition. We work with farmers around the provision of wild bird cover
mixes and game crop and our most recent habitat improvements around duck nesting with the provision of nest tubes have been recognised locally and nationally. Key to the success of projects is:

• The provision of suitable habitat
• Control of predator species

The NARGC advocates for sustainable hunting of game species in the natural environment and believes that conservation and hunting go hand in hand. We believe that education around these topics instills responsibility, ethical behaviour, improves skills and knowledge, and encourages the involvement of beginner and veteran hunters alike.

This two-day course is LANTRA certified, NPWS approved and accepted by Coillte. It meets the NPWS competence criteria for first-time deer licence applicants.
Day 1 – Classroom Session

🎨 NARGC ÓIGE COLOURING COMPETITION 2026/2027

NARGC Óige is delighted to launch our 2026/2027 Primary Schools Colouring Competition, celebrating one of Ireland’s most endangered native farmland birds—the Grey Partridge.

The competition is open to children throughout Ireland, entering through their school or from home with the help of a parent or guardian.

There are four age categories:

🖍 Junior & Senior Infants
🖍 1st & 2nd Class
🖍 3rd & 4th Class
🖍 5th & 6th Class

Our new wildlife education website, www.nargcwildlifeeducation.com, contains everything needed to take part, including:

✅ Four age-appropriate colouring pictures
✅ Teacher lesson plans
✅ Grey Partridge information and resources
✅ Entry forms and full competition instructions

🏆 Winners will receive NARGC merchandise, a framed copy of their winning artwork and an opportunity to visit an NARGC Grey Partridge Restoration Project in spring 2027.

Winning schools will also receive nest boxes, outdoor wildlife signs and other resources to support wildlife education and biodiversity.

📅 Entries close Friday, 13 November 2026.
🏆 Winners will be announced in December.

Grey Partridge Project Open Day – Dublin

A great day was had at our recent Open Day at the Dublin Grey Partridge Project, bringing together clubs and individuals already involved in the wider Grey Partridge conservation programme, along with others interested in becoming involved.

The day provided a valuable opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and learn from the practical experience that has been built up through the project. From breeding and rearing birds to habitat management, supplementary feeding and predator control, there was plenty of useful discussion on what is required to establish and maintain a successful Grey Partridge conservation project.

A particular thanks to Derek O’Brien for hosting the day, sharing his experience and giving a number of very informative presentations and practical demonstrations. His knowledge and insights were greatly appreciated by everyone who attended.

The continued growth of the Grey Partridge Project demonstrates what can be achieved when local clubs, volunteers and conservation-minded individuals work together for the benefit of one of Ireland’s most iconic native game birds.

Thanks to everyone who travelled to attend and contributed to the day. We hope the event will encourage even more clubs and individuals to become involved in the years ahead.
