Ardtarmon Castle has commanded the sea approaches to Sligo town since it was built in the early 1600s; and is now a friendly and comfortable home away from home for our self-catering holiday guests.
All our sunny and immaculately clean apartments in the castle are south facing with spectacular views over Sligo Bay, with open fireplaces or wood-burning stoves in each apartment. The lay-out is open plan living/kitchen/dining areas, with en-suite bedrooms and tiled floors with underfloor heating throughout. All apartments are furnished with quality rustic furniture, and solid wooden oak beam ceilings also feature for that authentic castle ambience. Spend your evenings relaxing by the fireside after a day playing at the beach, imagining intercepting pirates; or for the more adventurous, we are 20 minutes by car from Sligo town and a lovely home base to explore the northwest of Ireland from. While being a guest here you can enjoy private access to Ardtarmon Strand, a safe and secluded swimming beach with gorgeous views over Sligo Bay, and relax in our little beach hut. We are situated a stone's throw from Raughley peninsula; featuring the beautiful Raughley Walk with the magnificent blow hole, old coast guard station, and romantic Raughley harbour. Swimming, walking on the secluded Yellow Strand, beachcombing, and taking breathtaking trips along the rugged Maugherow and Lislary coastline are things we like to do. At night enjoy the solitude and twinkling lights of Strandhill and Sligo town from your comfy king size bed. Ardtarmon Castle has a fascinating history. It is the original family seat of the family of Constance Marcievicz, the famous Rebel Countess who aided in the liberation of Ireland. The castle was originally built in its current architectural configuration by Paul Gore, after possible previous incarnations as a Norman Motte and Bailey visible from local topography. Written accounts suggest that the sailors of the Spanish Armada sought aid here on their voyage in 1588 before their terrible shipwrecks on Streedagh beach. Paul's descendant Nathaniel married Letitia Booth and founded the Gore-Booth family, and after a fire devastated the castle in the 1700s they moved along the coast a little bit and built Lissadell House. In 1979 Ardtarmon Castle was purchased by Holger and Erika Schiller from Bavaria; and they and their 4 children devoted their lives to restoring it to its former glory, with the help of wonderful local craftspeople and friends. Holger and his son-in-law, the racing driver Fionn Murray, lost their lives in an airplane accident in 1998. Ardtarmon Castle is still the beloved family home of the Schiller family, and 3 self-catering apartments are available in the west wing for short term holiday rentals to our valued guests.
