If the First Home Scheme is what gets you onto the property ladder, it could be well worth considering.

The key is understanding how it works today, and having a plan for the future.

Pensions are full of jargon, but they don't have to be confusing.

The goal isn't just to earn more, it's to spend less than you earn.

Even a small monthly surplus gives you more options, more flexibility, and greater peace of mind over time.

They’re in what they hope will be their forever home, they’ve worked hard to save for their wedding and renting out a room has helped them get there.

But in a year’s time, their finances could look completely different.

The rental income will likely disappear when they start a family. They’re planning for six months of unpaid leave after their first child arrives. Childcare, food and all the other costs that come with children will follow.

On paper, they’re left with around €525 each month. In reality, that surplus already has jobs lined up.

❌ A few things stood out to me:

🔹Just €1,000 in an emergency fund once the wedding is paid for.
🔹A new €5,000 loan from the wedding.
🔹No income protection for either of them.
🔹One has built up a strong pension with 13% of salary going in between employer and employee contributions. The other only started saving for retirement this year through Auto-Enrolment.
🔹Their annual holiday is effectively funded by the extra salary payments they each receive during the year, rather than from monthly savings.

✅ The positives?

🏡 They’re already in the home they see themselves raising a family in.
💍 They’ve been disciplined enough to save towards their wedding.
📈 They’re contributing to pensions.
💶 They still have monthly surplus rather than running at a deficit.

This is exactly where financial planning becomes valuable, and the decisions they make over the next 12-24 months will have a much bigger impact than the ones they’ve already made.

If you were in their shoes, what would be your priority before starting a family?

👉Build a larger emergency fund?
👉Clear the wedding loan?
👉Save towards six months of unpaid leave?
👉Put income protection in place?

Financial struggles don't always look the way you think they do.

Many high-income households are under pressure too—and talking about money shouldn't be something people feel ashamed of. Sometimes, knowing you're not alone is the first step towards making things better.

The biggest financial mistake isn't choosing the wrong investment, it's not having a plan at all.

Too many people put off financial planning, hoping everything will work itself out. But with people living longer and the cost of living continuing to rise, hoping isn't a strategy.

A financial plan isn't just about retirement. It's about protecting your income, your family, and giving yourself more choices throughout life.

Don't rely on the State to fund your retirement.

Today's younger generations are facing more financial pressure than ever—from housing and childcare to career uncertainty.

The earlier you take control of your retirement planning, the more options you'll have later in life.
