Like any good trad fest, the session trail is at the heart of it — and here at Féile Thomas Kiernan, we expect it to be no different! 🎻🍻

It’s a pleasure to announce some of the fantastic local musicians who will be kicking off Tradfest Night 1 — Friday, September 25th.

These three are no strangers to the Longford music scene and can often be found sharing collections of tunes at the monthly Tally Ho session. We’re delighted to welcome them to Ballinamuck this September and can’t wait to hear what they bring to the session trail!

Liam Doherty & Aisling Clarke

As resident musicians at the Thursday night session in the 98, Liam and Aisling know exactly how to get a session moving. We’re expecting them to pull it out of the bag (or cases!) and get the festival off to a lively start. 🎶

With great local musicians, great tunes and plenty of craic, Night 1 is shaping up to be some session!

Near Granard in County Longford stands one of the most complete Norman motte and bailey castles still visible anywhere in Ireland — and almost nobody outside the local area knows it exists.

Built in the late 12th century, the massive earthen mound once supported a wooden tower, part of the rapid strategy Norman lords used to lock down control over newly conquered land across the country.

Unlike stone castles that survived the centuries, the original timber tower here rotted away long ago, leaving only the dramatic earthwork mound behind as proof of what once stood there. The site still commands a sweeping view of the surrounding countryside — exactly the kind of strategic spot Norman lords looked for when building fast and defensible.

Despite its scale and history, it’s still mostly a local landmark. These days it’s climbed mostly by locals out for a walk, not visitors chasing Norman history.

We look forward to welcoming Musicians and Music Lovers to Ballinamuck this September for the inaugural weekend Festival Celebrating the Music and legacy of the Blind Fiddler that was Thomas Kiernan.

This weekend is an excellent opportunity to see what local musicians in Longford have to offer as well as a showcase from guest musicians around Ireland.

There will be plenty of Music, Song and dance, throughout this lively celebration of culture in the village of Ballinamuck through concerts, sessions and instrument workshops.
