Mary Brau came to Samburu and left having adopted a baby elephant.

At Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, in Namunyak Conservancy, orphaned and abandoned calves are rescued, cared for, and raised toward a return to the wild. Africa's first community-owned elephant sanctuary, founded in 2016 and run almost entirely by Samburu keepers, including some of the country's first female elephant keepers.

Mary spent the morning there. Feeding time first, then a quieter moment standing at the fence while a young elephant reached out with its trunk to check her hand for anything worth having.

Adopting doesn't mean taking an elephant home. It means funding its care until it's strong enough to rejoin a wild herd, with updates along the way on how it's doing.

In a few days, we're heading to Marrakech for PURE - four days where the people shaping experiential sit down and have conversations, not pitch.

We're proud that Lemek Conservancy is a finalist in the Conservation category, put forward by Saruni Basecamp. Lemek is Maasai land, kept open by the families who call it home, so wildlife and communities could carry on thriving side by side. We're glad to bring their story to PURE.

No two tents face quite the same way, giving each its own view. It's a small detail, but it means privacy isn't an afterthought here.

Mornings open onto the valley below, coffee in hand, before the day's plans take shape.

There is no light between our camp and the horizon, which means the Samburu sky still does what skies did before electricity. The Milky Way arrives without being asked.

Guests who have never seen it go quiet, and our guides, who have seen it every clear night of their lives, wait for exactly that pause.

Most of the world's remaining population lives in northern Kenya, on land like this, which makes the conservancies here less a place to see them than part of the reason there are any to see.

Most guests assume more rain means more wildlife. In the north, the opposite is true. Dry season hands the decision to water: elephant, impala, and the scavengers that follow them converge on the few places still holding it, sharing the same ground at the same hour.

Our guides do not go looking. They wait at the right place.

The Maasai and the Samburu are relatives.

Both speak Maa, and the languages are close enough that our teams from the south and north understand one another. Two peoples, two landscapes, one linguistic root running from the Mara's grasslands to Kalama's red earth.

It is also the shape of our company: the same partnership, drawn twice.
