5 things you probably didn’t know about Kenya 🇰🇪
1. A wilderness bigger than Wales
Tsavo National Park covers over 20,000 km², about 4% of the whole country. No towns, no cities, no villages. Just elephants dusted in red earth, lions and endless savannah.
2. Snow on the Equator
Mount Kenya sits almost exactly on the Equator, yet its peaks still carry glaciers. The country takes its name from this mountain.
3. The world’s largest desert lake
Lake Turkana is the largest permanent desert lake on Earth. Its blue-green water has earned it the nickname “the Jade Sea”.
4. A lost city swallowed by the forest
Just a few kilometres from Watamu, the Gede Ruins are a Swahili town founded in the 12th century and abandoned in the 17th. Nobody knows for sure why its people left. The forest took it back.
5. One small peninsula, four ecosystems
Watamu lies inside a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Coral reef, mangrove creeks, ancient coastal forest and turtle-nesting beaches are all within a few minutes of each other.
Kenya is far more than safari. And the best part? You can see all of this from one place.
