Discover the Magic of Tongariro: The Silica Rapids Walk
If you are looking for a spectacular, varied walk in the heart of Tongariro National Park, the Silica Rapids Walk is a must-add to your itinerary. This 2.5-hour return loop delivers a masterclass in shifting landscapes—starting in lush native forest, climbing through alpine bogs, and culminating at a striking geological wonder.
Here is what makes this track so incredibly unique:
• The Golden Stream: Your journey begins near the Whakapapa Holiday Park, crossing the Whakapapanui Stream and winding through beautiful beech forest. Keep an eye out for a fascinating golden stream, beautifully coloured by iron oxide from upstream swamps.
• Fragile Marshlands & Mountain Views: As you leave the forest, the track climbs onto a stunning alpine marsh. Sturdy boardwalks protect the fragile native flora—like tangle fern and red tussock—while opening up spectacular views of the surrounding volcanic peaks. Look closely into the sub-alpine ponds and you might spot kōura (our native freshwater crayfish)!
• Punaruku Falls: Past the Whakapapaiti junction, you'll track the stream to Punaruku Falls. Here, the Tawhainui Stream drops dramatically over an ancient lava flow—a truly spectacular sight after heavy rainfall.
• The Silica Terraces: The grand finale brings you to the Silica Rapids themselves. Here, the rushing stream deposits creamy white silica across shallow terraces, creating a brilliant, glowing contrast against the volcanic rock.
The trail loops back via a tussock-covered lava flow, passing the highest mountain beech trees before returning along Bruce Road. It is a fantastic, accessible adventure that perfectly showcases the raw, contrasting beauty of New Zealand’s oldest national park.

Te Puna Quarry Park is a must-visit destination in Tauranga. Once a working stone quarry from 1911 to 1979, passionate local volunteers have transformed this industrial site into a spectacular community park.
Located just 12 kilometres from my hometown, Tauranga, the park truly offers something for everyone. You can explore a variety of walking tracks and climbs—many of which are wheelchair accessible—while discovering incredible outdoor art and sculptures tucked into the landscape. The area is a haven for native bush, vibrant quarry gardens, and local wildlife. It is completely free to visit, making it the perfect destination for a sunny day out.
If you want to extend your road trip, the surrounding area has plenty more to offer. Just a short drive away lies Katikati, celebrated as New Zealand’s "Mural Town" for its vibrant street art and public sculptures. While there, you can wander the Haiku Pathway, which features the largest collection of haiku poems outside of Japan, or relax at the tranquil Katikati Bird Gardens. From panoramic hilltop lookouts to pristine beaches, this region is packed with hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Masterton (Māori: Whakaoriori) is a vibrant, artistic hub nestled in the heart of New Zealand's Wairarapa region. just a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Wellington. Separated from the capital by the Remutaka Ranges, this welcoming town is famous for its flat, cycle-friendly streets and incredibly friendly locals.
The downtown area serves as a fantastic open-air gallery. Visitors can download a digital art map to easily navigate the captivating sculptures and murals scattered through the central streets. Because the art is so highly concentrated, it makes for a breezy, flat walk or bike ride with plenty of time to stop at the town’s excellent boutique cafes.
While exploring, you can visit Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, discover local farming heritage at The Wool Shed, or relax at Queen Elizabeth Park with its beautiful lake, miniature train, and iconic swing bridge.
When you are ready to put your feet up, booking a stay at the Acorn Estate Motel provides the perfect base. Located just a short drive from the main C*D trail, this quiet spot is widely praised for its welcoming hosts, spotless rooms, and an outdoor pool and hot tub to unwind in.
