Bream Head or also known in Māori as Te Whara 🏔️

The legend of Te Whara

Long ago, the great ancestor Manaia was travelling along the coast with his people. Manaia was a powerful rangatira and a famous navigator.

As they journeyed through Bream Bay (Te Moana-o-Raukawakawa), Manaia and his people encountered a terrible storm. The waves rose high and the winds howled around the rocky coastline.

Manaia called upon his gods and ancestors for protection. When the storm finally passed, the landscape was transformed. The great rocky headland stood proudly above the sea, watching over the bay.

The headland became known as Te Whara, and its shape and surrounding rocks became connected with the people, their ancestors and the stories of their journeys through this coastline.

There is also a tradition that Manaia’s canoe, Te Waka o Manaia, and his descendants are connected with the Whangārei Heads and Bream Head area. The mountain and surrounding coastline are therefore much more than beautiful scenery—they are part of a wider ancestral landscape.

Today, Te Whara is regarded as a place of considerable cultural significance. The name is a reminder that the land carries the stories and whakapapa of the people who have lived there for generations.
