Secluded, tranquil, private and yet still only a short distance from Taupo's restaurants and attractions. Whakaipo Lodge offers two beautifully appointed suites, each with its own private patio. Guests can relax in front of the log fire in the lodge lounge, or sit in the gardens, under a market umbrella and be entertained by native bird life, while enjoying a lovely New Zealand w**e. Perhaps wander around the gardens and farm and say hello to our friendly sheep.

There’s Nothing Like a Good Root in the Bush A story that started in the Tararuas, on a 5m high fault scarf, in a howling Tararua gale, had its conclusion today on the Headland Section of the Great Lake Trail. That Tararua trip and the title caption were Garth’s attempt to cheer Angie, who was wet, cold, miserable and close to throwing the pack at him. With a hut only 20 minutes away she needed the assistance of a root that was a perfectly positioned handhold to ascend the rock step. The joke fell a bit flat, even though the root proved incredibly helpful…. Fast forward 30 odd years and it would seem that the good folk at Bike Taupo tolerate no roots in the bush!! No no no! Not one! They’ve all been cleared in a sanitation project that would be the dream of Wellington Water! A perfect ride day punctuated by left over egg, mayo and cucumber sandwiches, fresh trail dust and even a broken chain 10ks out could not dampen the spirits…Always carry a chain breaker…With views like these I’m certain you’ll all get it…and well done to the team at Bike Taupo on the great job tidying up the track.

Great news for Mapara Valley! A new publicly accessible automated external defibrillator (AED) has been installed at Whakaipo Lodge, thanks to an amazing community fundraising effort led by lodge owners Garth and Angie London.

Mapara Valley, on the northern shore of Lake Taupō, includes Whakaipo Bay, a favourite spot for swimmers, boaties, walkers and mountain bikers on the Great Lake Trail. For visitors and residents alike, the lack of nearby emergency cardiac equipment was becoming a real concern. The closest public AED was in Acacia Bay, a 15- to 20-minute return trip even in quiet traffic. In a cardiac arrest, every minute matters.

Fundraising kicked off in 2025 and centred on Whakaipo Lodge’s 12th summer concert in February 2026. Lodge team member Lynda Nightingale also held a birthday fundraiser, and the Acacia Bay Residents Association helped with logistics and promotion. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, the campaign raised enough to purchase and install the AED.

The weatherproof AED was installed on the outside wall of Whakaipo Lodge on 1 October 2026 and is available 24/7. It is registered with the AED Locations app, Hato Hone St John and the 111 call center.
