TDN SPECIAL FEATURE | IN PARANAS, CSOs HELP SHAPE LOCAL GOVERNANCE
Transport routes, barangay waste disposal and community projects—civil society organizations brought everyday concerns into discussions with local officials in Paranas, Samar.
According to the LGU’s account, the October 19 joint meeting of local special bodies and People’s Day, convened under Mayor Elvira Babalcon, gave CSOs space to raise issues alongside government and barangay officials.
CALT TODA President Conrado Basas Jr. raised zoning and routing concerns, which Vice Mayor Atty. Eunice U. Babalcon said would be considered in drafting a relevant ordinance. APOSAMANA President Mario Pabunan shared observations on waste management in Barangay Pagsaogan and moved to adopt the municipality’s Open Government Partnership flagship project, “Makabag-o nga Poblacion 5.”
Recognition of community contributions continued on October 21, when the vice mayor thanked the Nature and Climate School eco-facilitators during a session that reviewed their responsibilities and program activities.
These exchanges illustrate the value of giving community organizations a voice in public decisions. Sustaining that participation means keeping residents informed about agreed actions and their results.
What community concern would you bring to a People’s Day in your municipality?
