Ready to ring in the New Year? 🎉🥂
There’s no place quite like Lisbon for a truly spectacular New Year's Eve! You'll want to head down to Terreiro do Paço for a massive party leading up to midnight, complete with a magnificent fireworks display over the river. 🎆
A quick tip: It's a proper Portuguese tradition to eat twelve raisins (one for each chime) for good luck in the coming year, so make sure you've got your packet ready! 🍇
Come and celebrate in the heart of the city and kick off your new year in spectacular style. See you in 2026! 🍾

'Tis the season for proper Portuguese Christmas treats! 🎄
When you spend Christmas in Lisbon, traditional holiday desserts are an absolute must! You simply must try the Bolo Rei (King Cake), a wonderfully rich, crown-shaped brioche dough packed with raisins, dried fruit, and candied fruit. It’s absolutely essential! 👑
🍞 Then there are the divine, cinnamon dusted Rabanadas (our take on French toast), which are fried to golden perfection, and the delightfully light, fried dough delights, Filhós. These are often made with a touch of pumpkin or orange zest. They are wonderfully comforting and guaranteed to bring you that cosy Christmas feeling. ☕

Pop into any traditional pastelaria this time of year and treat yourself. You deserve it! 💝

Oceanário de Lisboa is one of the largest indoor aquariums in Europe and looks like a ship anchored at Parque das Nações. Inside, a massive central tank creates the brilliant illusion of a single, global ocean. 🌊
You'll see over 500 species, including graceful sharks, giant ocean sunfish, playful sea otters, and adorable penguins! It’s a truly unforgettable experience for the whole family. 🦈🐧

The Portuguese national dish, Cozido à Portuguesa, really is a fantastic winter warmer. 🥶
It's a generous, steaming platter absolutely packed with a rich selection of slow cooked ingredients: tender cuts of beef and pork, chicken, root vegetables, and, crucially, an array of traditional Portuguese smoked sausages such as chouriço, morcela, and farinheira. 🍲😋
It's a communal dish, perfect for family gatherings, and guarantees to leave you feeling warm and satisfied. Come into one of the many traditional restaurants around town and have a hearty bite. 🍽️

If you're walking through Lisbon, you'll find that history is written right into its stunning churches. They're far more than just religious spots, they're proper treasures showcasing centuries of Portuguese history. ⛪✨

Take the Sé de Lisboa in Alfama, it's got that old school, fortress-like look and survived the 1755 earthquake. Or, for a bit of awe, pop into the Igreja de São Roque up in Bairro Alto! But don't be fooled by the simple exterior, inside, you'll find the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, which is absolutely dripping in gold, jewels, and precious materials! It was actually built in Rome and then shipped over. 💎

They really are magnificent slices of the past. If you've got a moment, do go and see one, you won't regret it!

A big part of the Portuguese sweet tooth are the Doces Conventuais! 🍰
These aren't just any desserts, they're Portugal's magnificent collection of sweets, originally perfected by nuns and monks in monasteries and convents, mostly between the 15th and 19th centuries. 🏰
The secret? An abundance of egg yolks, combined with sugar and often almonds. Nuns used egg whites to starch their habits or clarify wine, leaving masses of yolks to create masterpieces like Pastéis de Nata (yes, they’re convent sweets!), the incredibly rich Toucinho do Céu (Bacon from Heaven, don't worry, there's no bacon!), and the delicate Ovos Moles from Aveiro. 🍮
They truly are a decadent slice of portuguese culinary culture.

While walking around downtown Lisbon, you might come across Igreja de São Domingos, sitting right near Rossio Square, it's a landmark with a truly powerful story. 📜
This church has been absolutely battered by history. It famously survived the massive 1755 earthquake, only to be ravaged by a devastating fire in 1959 that nearly destroyed the entire structure. 🔥⛪
What makes it so special now is that they decided not to hide the damage. You can still see the scorched, cracked columns and the huge stone pillars that bear the scars of the fire. It’s less about gold and glamour and more about the honest, raw history that's etched into its walls. 🕯️

❄️ As the weather turns chilly, a comforting bowl of soup really hits the spot, and the best option is surely Sopa da Pedra (Stone Soup). This famous Portuguese classic is a wonderfully hearty meal in itself, packed with beans, potatoes, and delicious cured meats like chouriço. 🥣
📜 But the best bit is the story! Legend has it that a hungry travelling monk arrived in a village and asked for food. When the locals weren't keen on sharing, he asked for a cauldron and some water to make a stone soup, dropping a single, smooth stone into the pot. Naturally, the curious villagers offered "just a little bit" of meat, beans, and vegetables to "help the flavour", and before long, they all had a magnificent feast to share! 🍲🤲
It’s a lovely tale about community and generosity, and the perfect, sturdy meal for the colder months. Get tucked in and try a bowl!
