The Association of the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth of Thailand (ASSEAY-THAILAND) was born out of several unofficial alumni gatherings of the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program’s past participants from 1974 and 1975. The loosely-formed association gradually grew and strengthened when a third batch of Thai participants came back at the end of 1976. They form a more official association consisting of participants from the first three batches of the program. Nine members (three from each participating year) form a management committee. From this committee, the official ASSEAY organization was formally registered as an independent entity on July 12th, 1982, ASSEAY, with the mission to strengthen and promotes the network of past Thai Participating Youths (Ex-PY) through various social activities. It was a private and independent entity with full support of the government’s National Youth Bureau which is under the Thai Prime Minister’s Office. At a special meeting on board the ship MS Nippon Maru on 25 November 2018, ASSEAY members elected a new president, Mr.Jakapan Thanateeranon, to hold the board chair between 2018-2020 after Dr. Siripong Preutthipan, the former President since 2012
