Winter has a way of slowing everything down on the mountain, and here at Gatekeeper Cottage, that quiet carries a long and meaningful history.
Just up the road sits Swannanoa, one of Nelson County’s most storied landmarks. Built in the early 1900s as a summer estate, Swannanoa was designed as a place of retreat — a refuge from heat, noise, and hurry. Even in winter, you can still feel that original intention: stillness, reflection, and perspective.
Gatekeeper Cottage was once part of that larger story. As the name suggests, it served as a watchful presence at the entrance, welcoming some and guiding others on their way. Today, it remains a small but special place — one that invites guests to pause, exhale, and experience the mountain at a gentler pace.
In winter, the views stretch farther. The air is crisp. The world feels quieter. Fires burn longer, mornings start slower, and the mountains remind us that rest is not wasted time — it’s part of the rhythm.
Whether you come for the history, the landscape, or simply the peace that winter brings, Gatekeeper Cottage continues to do what it has always done: stand quietly at the threshold, offering a sense of arrival.
