Before You Book That Bounce House: What Every Parent Should Know

Planning your child's birthday party? Before you click "book now" on that Facebook listing offering rock-bottom prices, there are a few things you should understand about who you're actually hiring.

The inflatable rental industry has been flooded with side-hustle operators — folks who bought one or two units, threw together a page, and are now in the "bounce house business." The reality is that anyone with a truck and about a thousand dollars can call themselves a rental company. Running an actual business that you can count on for your child's biggest day of the year takes considerably more than that.

Here's what you're often not getting when you book through these operators:

Commercial-grade equipment. The inflatables sold to side-hustle operators are typically residential or light-use units — not built to withstand the wear and tear of true commercial rental cycles. Commercial-grade units are a significantly larger investment, and most weekend operators simply don't carry them.

Proper insurance. Minimum liability coverage for a legitimate inflatable rental business runs around $5,000 per year at the absolute lowest end. Many Facebook operators either carry no insurance at all or hold a policy that wouldn't actually cover an incident at your event. If a child is injured on an uninsured rental at your home, the liability can land squarely on you.

Worker's compensation and commercial auto coverage. When an uninsured operator's helper gets hurt setting up at your party, or their personal vehicle gets in an accident on the way to your house, those gaps in coverage can create serious problems for everyone involved.

Reliability. This is the one that hurts the most. Small operators with only a couple of inflatables routinely cancel reservations when a better-paying job comes in, when something closer to home pops up, or when their one truck breaks down or their only helper calls in sick. You find out the morning of your child's party that no one is coming. There is no backup plan because there is no backup.

This is where the difference between a hobby and a business matters.
