When your campsite is this close to a great hiking trail, what are you even doing if you don't hike it? ;) So that's what we did after we got up and around and got some work done yesterday.

And oh my goodness was it gorgeous!

So glad we did this hike. 🥰 🍁 🥾

The Moses H. Cone Memorial Park is just outside of Blowing Rock on the Blue Ridge Parkway and it's a pretty cool stop! You can go into the Flat Top Manor that was built by the Cone family in 1900 and there is also a huge outdoor area with lots of trails to explore. Inside they have a couple of shops and an NPS information center plus you can tour the top floor of the home if it's open and staffed. Unfortunately it wasn't at the moment when we visited. But just walking around outside and seeing the amazing views was pretty amazing!

We took a little detour off the Blue Ridge Parkway to check out the towns of Boone and Blowing Rock. Part of it was cool - part of it didn't really go as planned. 🤪

We parked at a Cracker Barrel for the night and it was a great spot - not a bad view for being in town. ;) Then in the morning we headed over to check out the Mast General Store in Boone. It's been in operation since 1889!

After that the plan was to head to Blowing Rock and check out the rock for which the town is named but I found out it's actually a tourist spot that's on private land so there's an admission fee. I'm not really interested in paying a fee to see a rock. 🤣

Then we were going to visit the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum but it's in their downtown area and we drove in circles around the town a couple of times and couldn't find a place to park. They had a parking garage down the street from the museum but those are always too short for us in the van. So the museum didn't happen. ☹️

Next we drove down the street to see the Green Park Inn. This is a place that is famous for hosting lots of celebrities and famous people - including Margaret Mitchell who wrote part of Gone With the Wind there. But then we arrived to find it all fenced off and under major renovations.

Ugh.

We just couldn't win.

So back to the parkway we went to get out of town. 😝

We were driving down the road and saw this pop up on one side and my eyes just got huge! 😍 Then I noticed that people were walking down there so I knew there had to be a pull off and sure enough there was!

Gosh I love fall! The trees are just absolutely beautiful!

There's a short "easy" trail that you can hike to Jumpinoff Rock as you travel down the Blue Ridge Parkway and we decided to do the hike. I say "easy" because that's what it said online but it was a pretty good climb up at the beginning and I was huffing and puffing. 😮‍💨 😅 🤣

It was sure beautiful though. Lots of colorful trees, pretty leaves and pinecones on the ground, and views of the mountains. Doesn't get much better!

We've been doing more campgrounds than we normally do as we've traveled down Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Since we're driving the whole thing, it's easy when one is right along the road - plus some areas are more remote than others and it would be a decent detour off the road to drive somewhere to boondock so it's not necessarily worth it.

We stopped at Doughton Park Campground after we got into North Carolina on the BRP and had a great time. We built a fire (they allow you to collect wood that's down!) and grilled our chicken for dinner and then enjoyed sitting by the fire until it dwindled.

It was a great evening!

If you're traveling the parkway, this is a great stop. They don't have full hook ups but they do have a dump station, water, trash, and bathrooms with flush toilets. And it's a beautiful area of course!
