My Colorado Hemma

My Colorado Hemma Hemma means “home” in Swedish—a feeling, not just a place. We've sold our loved home called the Dairy and are on a new journey. Stay tuned for updates!

I share my love of remodeling, home design, and entertaining, all with Scandinavian simplicity and warmth. Borta bra, men hemma bäst. = Away is good, but home is best.

We have babies! 🐣

A few weeks ago, a little house finch decided our front-door wreath was the perfect place to build a nest. Then came four tiny blue eggs. And now… baby birds!

It’s been such a joy watching this small miracle unfold right outside the front door. Mama has been incredibly dedicated, and somehow these tiny hatchlings appeared almost overnight.

Welcome to the world, little ones. We’re cheering you on from a respectful distance. ❤️

One unexpected thing happened today.

We opened up the staircase, and somehow the whole house feels lighter.

The visual connection between the basement and upstairs completely changes how the space feels. It feels bigger, brighter, and more open—even upstairs.

The last photo is the inspiration for where we're headed: a Scandinavian-inspired slat wall that will define the staircase without closing it off.

Sometimes progress isn't about adding more. It's about removing barriers.

Today’s progress was one of those fun remodeling milestones. This morning it was a bunch of measurements and lines on the concrete. By afternoon, framing was going up and we could finally “see” the space.

The future bedroom, bathroom, laundry room, office nook, wet bar, and living area are no longer just drawings—they’re starting to feel real. It’s amazing what a few studs can do for your imagination. And yes, Kalle has already inspected everything and approved the workmanship. 🐾🔨

Long Drive Basement: Phase 1 ✅

Before the pretty finishes, stacked stone fireplaces, cabinetry, and furniture boards come the important things:

• Final floor plan approved
• Plumbing locations verified
• Concrete opened up to confirm the pre-plumbed lines work with our design
• Dumpster and porta-potty on deck

Not exactly Instagram-worthy, but these are the decisions that determine whether a remodel goes smoothly or becomes expensive.

The vision is a warm, light-filled walkout living area with a bedroom, bath, office area, wet bar, laundry, and plenty of room for family to gather.

It’s starting to feel real. 🔨🏡✨

I get to start a couple of new projects this month — and first up is transforming an unfinished basement into a warm and inviting walk-out living space.

The vision:

• One-bedroom guest retreat
• Large cozy living area
• Office nook
• Wet bar
• Bathroom + laundry
• Lots of layered lighting, earthy textures, warm woods, and comfortable details designed to flow naturally with the upstairs of the home

The basement already has such good bones, so this project is less about chasing trends and more about creating something timeless, functional, and welcoming.

Sharing a few inspiration images because the dreaming and planning stage might honestly be my favorite part. 😊

Work starts in early June.

Update on the little porch nest: it looks like our tiny visitor may not be a robin after all, but a mama house finch. 🪺

Apparently the blue eggs, cozy wreath nest, and her sweet little face all point to finch. She seems quite content tucked into her sheltered little corner of the porch — and honestly, watching her quietly care for those eggs has been a pretty lovely reminder to slow down and appreciate simple things.

Here’s a bright spot for today. 🤍

Remember the little nest built on the wreath that used to hang on my front door? I carefully moved the wreath to a sheltered brick wall nearby after a hardworking mama bird built her nest there. I hoped she — or maybe another mama bird looking for a safe little porch nursery — might still decide it was home.

Well… today we spotted FOUR tiny blue eggs tucked inside. 🪺

From what I can tell, they may be robin eggs, which somehow makes the whole thing feel even more like spring and fresh beginnings.

After a particularly stressful couple of days, this tiny little nest unexpectedly felt like a reminder to slow down and notice the simple joys of life again. Funny how something so small can bring a little peace back into the day.

Nature is good like that sometimes.

One of my favorite things about this home is that it seems to quietly welcome little visitors. First, a nest tucked into the wreath on the front door… and now this tiny bunny has decided the porch is a safe place to sit for a while.

I sometimes miss the mountain house and all the wildlife that came with it — the constant little reminders that nature was right outside the door. So maybe these small visits here in the city feel like a gentle nod that you don’t have to live deep in the mountains to still feel connected to those things.

There’s something comforting about a home that feels lived in not just by people, but by nature too. Maybe it’s the quiet. Maybe it’s the plants and corners to hide in. Or maybe these little creatures just know where they’re safe and unwelcome things aren’t.

Either way, I’m taking it as a compliment 🐇

Snipped a few lilacs from the yard this afternoon… and just like that, spring feels real again.

There’s something about that color—and that scent—that stops you for a minute. Simple, beautiful, and one of my mom’s all-time favorites—which makes them feel even more special. 💜

A little home experiment happened in my kitchen today.

My family gave me these beautiful wood block candle holders that I absolutely love. Each one holds a small candle vessel tucked inside… that I love burning - even daily - but the replacement candles are spendy and that adds up quickly.

So I decided to try making my own.

Turns out it’s shockingly easy — melt soy wax, add a wick, pour, and let it set. Now I can refill each candle for less than $1.50 instead of $20 each.

Same cozy glow. Much happier wallet.

I have a feeling this might turn into a new little creative hobby. I’m already looking forward to experimenting with fragrances, different vessels, and maybe even decorating the containers.

Stay tuned… there may be more candles in my future.

What fun. 🕯️
