Chewing her marrow bone > Chewing my baseboards. It’s well known if you don’t give a cattle dog a job, they will just find one on their own. Ruby’s eyes went SUPER wide when I pulled out this Marrow bone from 𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐔𝐒 & 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐁𝐘 via Chewy !

Girl. It’s time for Lamb Ear Chompee, thanks to our friends at H&N Homestead | Natural Pet Treats 🐑We are still pretty new to hair-on body part chews, but Ruby loved it and it had a hella satisfying crunch for her ASMR microphone 🦴 Would recommend!

Did you know… Lamb Ears can reduce plaque and tartar buildup, promoting healthy teeth and gums. The hairy ears provide mental stimulation and can act like a broom, sweeping the digestive system of potential parasites and stuck food.

These days most of my plans involve my cattle dog… we are just having so much fun together! Training, enrichment, and mental/physical workouts don’t have to look the same every day. Mix it up! Lately we have been doing AKC Fit Dog, Obedience and Agility Training, playing lots of ball, and letting her do some tree trimming 🤣

My non-negotiable? Every collar Ruby wears has to be high-quality, safe, and QUIET. Even with her microchip, she wears a name tag on all her gear, and besties is the only tag we use. After a year of full-on Cattle Dog mayhem, they still look brand new and clean up so easily! And because they’re silicone… NO JINGLE. My ears are very grateful.

This is the kind of tired and fulfilled I aspire to be. Minus the drool…maybe. A tired cattle dog is a fulfilled cattle dog.

TDA (Trick Dog Advanced) offers lots of skills to pick from- pause to read them all. The good news is that you only need 10! Which one should we get started on next? Too bad “spring in the air like a lunatic” isn’t on there already….

———
AKC Trick Dog is a fun beginner-friendly dog sport that focuses on teaching your dog useful and entertaining skills through positive training. Dogs earn titles by performing a certain number of tricks at different levels, starting with Novice and working up through Intermediate, Advanced, Performer, and Elite Performer. Tricks can be simple things like sit, spin, shake, crawl, jump through a hoop, put toys away, or ring a bell to go outside. The goal isn’t perfect obedience, instead it’s building teamwork, confidence, and communication with your dog in a low-pressure environment that works for dogs of all ages and breeds.

Getting started is pretty simple. Start by choosing a few easy tricks your dog already knows or can learn quickly using treats, toys, and short training sessions. AKC provides official trick lists for each title level, and you can either test in person with an AKC evaluator or submit videos online through approved evaluators. Most people begin with the Novice title, which only requires 10 basic tricks. Trick training is a great entry point into dog sports because you don’t need expensive equipment or a special facility. You can practice right in your living room for a few minutes a day and build from there.

Yes, I give my dog the equivalent of iPad time to be able to peacefully enjoy my coffee. We do so much training and enrichment, but sometimes you just have to press the “easy” button. The thing is, I get super worried about her choking on a bone when it gets too small- so I spend the time I wanted to be relaxing just staring at her.

I’ve tried a few “bone holders” but this smartie pants that she gets the pieces out. Chewise Bully Stick Holder has a metal tooth mechanism that actually digs into the bone, and it aint going NOWHERE. Phew.

Usually I am super nervous giving her a bone to chomp on if I’m not able watch her like a hawk, because I’m worried she will choke on the small bit at the end. I’ve tried a handful of other “bone holder” things but this girl outsmarts them. Chewise Bully Stick Holder has this insane metal holder piece within the actual screw tight slot that holds that chew like a freaking vice. I can legit recommend this, and won’t be giving her other big chews without this thing!
