Just for the sake of transparency, I’m an Airbnb Superhost, and I charge a $17 cleaning fee. $17 per stay. That's for 1 night or 5. (Let’s remember, I also manage an actual outhouse.)
I understand the argument that people are on vacation and shouldn’t have to clean when they leave. And I agree that guests shouldn’t be expected to spend their last morning scrubbing bathrooms, stripping beds, or cleaning an entire rental.
But I do think it’s reasonable to ask guests to take care of their dishes. If the rental has a dishwasher, put your dirty dishes in it. If it doesn’t, wash your dishes as you go.
It’s disappointing that, as a host, I can no longer include something as simple as “wash your dishes” in my house rules.
House rules are available to read before booking. If you don’t want to wash your dishes during your stay, that’s your choice. But it’s also your responsibility to choose a rental whose expectations work for you.
