👻 A Haunting Tale from Lake County's Past
Did you know that an old church in downtown Lakeport was once the center of a mysterious ghost story?
Built in 1888 on North Forbes Street, the historic church reportedly became home to an unexplained presence that its occupants eventually nicknamed “Elijah.”
In 1972, a family purchased the building and began converting it into a commercial space. Not long afterward, they reported hearing footsteps overhead, strange pounding near the bell tower, and loud crashes with no apparent explanation.
But one of the eeriest encounters reportedly happened on Halloween morning.
A woman staying inside the building claimed she was awakened by a loud knock on her bedroom door. Looking toward the living room, she described seeing a shimmering, translucent white figure moving along the wall. She said the figure appeared to open and close its mouth before disappearing.
Moments later, she reportedly heard breathing and the sound of floorboards creaking outside her bedroom.
The family eventually sought help from psychics, who suggested the mysterious presence might have been connected to the property long before the church was constructed.
The story was featured in a Lake County News article published on October 31, 2007.
Of course, these are personal accounts, and there's no verified evidence that the building was haunted. But it's one of those fascinating pieces of local folklore that adds a little mystery to Lake County's history.
Have you ever heard the story of Elijah? Or experienced something unexplained in one of Lake County's older buildings?
We'd love to hear your stories!
