Help stop the cairns. Don’t stack rocks.

Smokies streams aren’t just beautiful spots for visitors to enjoy, they’re thriving wildlife habitats. Cool mountain waters support fish, salamanders, and countless aquatic invertebrates. But these species can only survive when their homes stay undisturbed.

A cairn—an intentionally stacked pile of rocks—might seem harmless, but it’s not.
When rocks are stacked or moved, it destroys the shelters where animals live, hide, and lay eggs. You can help protect these fragile aquatic ecosystems by leaving rocks exactly where you find them.

Sunny and hot again today, around 70° at the summit and seeing triple digits down below. If any rain manages to fall this afternoon, it might just be a nice reprieve from the heat.

Expect the park to be a busy place this holiday weekend. Reminder that our reservations office will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. Normal business hours will resume on Tuesday.

Another clear morning followed by a cloudy afternoon. No rain has fallen yet today, but there’s still a possibility as we approach the evening hours. While this pattern will continue over the coming days, temps are going to gradually increase across all elevations each day. Plan and pack accordingly!
