Down in the southwest corner of the U.P., where Menominee meets the bay, a whole block of the old downtown still looks much the way it did a century and more ago. 🏙️

This is a corner of the First Street Historic District, a stretch of Menominee's old commercial heart that was placed on the National Register back in 1974. Most of what you see went up around the 1890s, when the lumber money was flowing, built of local red sandstone and homemade brick, right down to that round corner tower that has watched over the street for generations. 🧱

More than forty buildings in the district have held on through boom and bust and the long slow decline of the mills. Walk it today and you can still read the whole story of a Great Lakes town in its storefronts and cornices. 🌊
